Fans of Matlock will have to wait a little longer for the next chapter. CBS has officially moved the hit legal drama's third season to its 2027 midseason lineup, a strategic delay that creator Jennie Snyder Urman says is essential for the show's creative future.
The series, starring Kathy Bates as the sharp-witted Matty Matlock, has been a standout for the network since its debut. It earned critical acclaim (a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and strong ratings, proving that a modern twist on a beloved classic could resonate with today's audiences. But the show's central mystery—Matty's quest to expose the company responsible for her daughter's death—was always designed to have a finite arc. Unlike typical procedurals that stretch their premises for years, Matlock resolved the Wellbrexa case at the end of Season 2, setting the stage for a major reset.
That reset is exactly why the show won't appear on CBS's fall 2026 schedule. In an interview, Urman explained that she approached the network with a request: hold the premiere until midseason to give her writing team time to build a new, airtight mystery. "Sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it's airtight," she said. "We had a lot of pieces going in, so we really had to create this new piece of it. I feel lucky that the network’s giving us time to get it right because I don’t want the quality to drop."
Urman's dedication to quality is evident in the show's success. The first season became a streaming sensation after landing on Netflix, introducing the series to an even wider audience. That momentum, combined with the critical and commercial success of Season 2, makes the delay a calculated risk—one that Urman believes will pay off.
So what can fans expect from Season 3? Urman teased that the new mystery will build on the old one but won't be a direct continuation. She hinted at themes involving insurance and healthcare, suggesting a fresh angle that could resonate with contemporary viewers. The show is already in production, indicating that the creative team has a clear vision for where Matty's journey goes next.
While the wait may be frustrating, the extra time could be a blessing. As Urman put it, "The quality is everything to me." That commitment to storytelling is what has made Matlock a standout in a crowded TV landscape. For now, fans can catch up on both existing seasons on Paramount+ and keep an eye out for more updates. And if you're looking for other shows to fill the void, check out Off Campus's return or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' new season.
In the meantime, the entertainment world is buzzing with other premieres, like Nolan's The Odyssey returning to theaters and Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reuniting for a Bill & Ted arcade game. But for Matlock devotees, the countdown to 2027 has officially begun.
