Before Keanu Reeves was dismantling criminal empires over a slain canine, his most pressing dilemma was acing history class alongside his best friend. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure turned a potentially disastrous school presentation into a wild scheme to snatch historical icons, introduce Napoleon to a water park, and place the fate of humanity in the hands of two teens who clearly needed a tutor. Somehow, they were exactly the right duo for the job.
That enduring friendship carried the pair through the afterlife and a long-awaited third film, with Reeves and Alex Winter making their relentless optimism impossible to resist. Bill and Ted may misinterpret nearly everything around them, but they face each new catastrophe with the confidence of people blissfully unaware of the danger they're in.
Now, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure: Arcade is bringing the beloved duo back in a brand-new video game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Developed by Art of Play Interactive, this 16-bit-inspired adventure features the voices of Reeves and Winter, letting players dive into time-traveling chaos solo or with a friend via couch co-op. A crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on BackerKit in February 2027, though the game itself doesn't have a release date yet.
What Is 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure: Arcade' About?
The game revisits the original movie's history-report dilemma, sending Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan through 15 side-scrolling levels. Players will encounter Billy the Kid, Socrates, Napoleon, Beethoven, and Genghis Khan, challenging these historical figures in individual minigames to secure their help. Recruiting the people who actually lived through your homework remains an impressively over-the-top response to the threat of a failing grade.
Brawling accompanies those encounters, with hand-crafted pixel art and an '80s rock soundtrack setting the tone. Completing story mode unlocks arcade mode, minigames, and additional content. Couch co-op feels like a natural fit for a franchise whose heroes would struggle to get through an afternoon without checking in with each other. There's something reassuring about knowing a friend can join you when your academic future depends on impressing Genghis Khan.
The developers are also planning digital and limited physical editions, with merchandise and apparel included in the crowdfunding plans. Art of Play's previous projects include The Phantom, giving the studio experience translating another established property into retro-styled action. Fans can already follow the BackerKit campaign for updates ahead of its launch. After the elaborate journey to get Face the Music made, another trip through the phone booth is welcome, especially one that lets fans bring their own equally unqualified partner.
