Marvel's animated revival X-Men '97 has been a hit with fans, and with Season 2 wrapping up, the excitement for what's next is already building. The show has been renewed for not just a third season but also a fourth, ensuring the mutant saga continues well into the future. Marvel Studios' Head of TV and Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, has even hinted at the possibility of the series extending beyond 2028, so the X-Men are here to stay.
One of the standout voices in the series is Gui Agustini, who brings the fiery Brazilian mutant Sunspot (Roberto Da Costa) to life. In a recent chat with Collider, Agustini opened up about his dream scenarios for upcoming episodes, and he's got some exciting ideas that would thrill comic book purists.
A New Mutants Reunion
When asked which comic storylines he'd love to see adapted, Agustini didn't hesitate: he wants Cannonball to join the fray. "I would love to have Cannonball come in and be part of this world somehow," he said, "and show a little bit of the bromance that they have in the comics with the New Mutants." For those who know the source material, Sunspot and Cannonball share a deep friendship that's been a cornerstone of the New Mutants series, and bringing that dynamic to the animated series would be a treat for longtime fans.
Love Triangle Drama
But Agustini isn't stopping there. He also expressed a desire to see the return of Deathbird, a character who made a brief appearance in Season 1. "One of my favorite scenes is with Sunspot and Deathbird," he revealed. "In the first season, she makes an appearance, and I'm hoping she can come back, and maybe we can have a little something like in the comics and create a little drama between the three of us with Jubilee." That would certainly add a spicy romantic subplot to the show, and with Sunspot's charismatic personality, it's a recipe for compelling television.
While fans eagerly await Season 3, there's also buzz about the live-action X-Men reboot in the MCU. Directed by Jake Schreier with a script from Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, the film is expected to hit theaters after Avengers: Secret Wars. Casting rumors have already started, with names like Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, and Kit Connor as Scott Summers floating around. But for now, the animated series remains the primary focus for mutant enthusiasts.
