Paramount+ has finally revealed when Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return for its second and final season: March 2027. The announcement came during a packed New York Comic Con panel, where the cast and creative team also unveiled the first official images from the upcoming episodes.

The panel, moderated by Collider's Perri Nemiroff, featured stars Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, and Robert Picardo, along with co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Fans in attendance were treated to a sneak peek at the new season, which finds the cadets embarking on a perilous mission to an alien world as they continue their training to become Starfleet officers in a rapidly changing galaxy.

New Faces Join the Crew

The first-look images also introduced two intriguing guest stars. Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean, Living) will appear as Nyk Ake, the estranged Lanthanite father of Chancellor Nahla Ake (Hunter). Meanwhile, Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married, Untamed) joins as Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and mother to cadet Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner). Betazed, which rejoined the United Federation of Planets last season, has since become the Federation's new capital, making Laytha a figure of considerable political importance.

Who Are the Lanthanites and Betazoids?

For those who need a refresher on Trek lore, the Lanthanites are a species that looks entirely human but possesses extraordinarily long lifespans. Pelia (Carol Kane), a 5,000-year-old Lanthanite, served as Chief Engineer aboard the USS Enterprise in Strange New Worlds. Nahla Ake is part-Lanthanite and has served as Chancellor of Starfleet Academy for over four centuries. The Betazoids, on the other hand, are an empathic race from the planet Betazed, distinguishable by their black irises. Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), a human-Betazoid hybrid, was the counselor on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and viewers will fondly remember her mother, Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett), a Betazoid aristocrat who frequently visited the Enterprise.

With Strange New Worlds also concluding next year, Starfleet Academy's final season marks the end of an era for the current generation of Trek series. The show's cancellation after just two seasons has been a sore spot for fans, but the upcoming episodes promise to send the series off with a bold, emotional arc.
