Norman Reedus may forever be synonymous with Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead universe, but the actor has been steadily expanding his résumé with a mix of high-profile projects. Last year, he joined Ana de Armas in Ballerina, the first John Wick spin-off, which, despite a rocky theatrical run, became a streaming sensation. He's also lent his talents to Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding series, though with Kojima moving on to other ventures, that chapter may be closed. And fans can look forward to Reedus starring opposite James Marsden in an upcoming Apple TV+ spy thriller, Disavowed, expected in 2027.
But before that, Reedus is diving back into horror with Pendulum, a new R-rated thriller that's set to hit theaters on January 1, 2027. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Phoebe Dynevor, Anna Deavere Smith, Jena Malone, and Jacki Weaver. Written and directed by Mark Heyman, who previously penned Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, Pendulum promises to be a chilling exploration of faith and fear.
Collider is thrilled to exclusively debut the first trailer for Pendulum, courtesy of Vertical. The film runs 109 minutes and is rated R. Heyman, drawing from his own childhood experiences, explains the inspiration: "PENDULUM grew out of my upbringing in and around various spiritual groups and gurus that my parents explored in the ’70s and ’80s. The film was inspired by one of their stranger encounters, and much of it is true. Having experienced that world from the inside, I wanted to capture how people get drawn into these cultish groups—and the danger of surrendering yourself completely to the unknown. Like those gurus, the film blurs the line between the physical and supernatural realms. Only instead of trying to heal you, it’s going to freak you out."
What Is Pendulum About?
Pendulum marks Heyman's directorial debut, and he had the support of producer Darren Aronofsky, a reunion of sorts from their Black Swan collaboration. The film's official synopsis reads: "In Mark Heyman's feature film directorial debut, married couple Patrick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail (Phoebe Dynevor) journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event. Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife, but becomes distrustful of the retreat’s enigmatic leader (Jacki Weaver) even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if the group’s spiritual practices offer genuine healing – or mask a terrifying truth that threatens to consume them both."
The trailer, which you can watch above, sets a tense, unsettling tone, showcasing the couple's descent into a world where nothing is as it seems. Reedus appears in a supporting role, adding his signature intensity to the proceedings. For fans of thrillers that grab you from the start, this one looks like a must-see.
With its January 1 release, Pendulum is poised to kick off 2027 with a jolt of horror. The film also stars Anna Deavere Smith and Jena Malone, rounding out a stellar ensemble. Heyman's script, inspired by real events, promises a story that blurs the line between the physical and the supernatural, leaving audiences questioning what's real and what's not.
For those who enjoy a good scare, Pendulum is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated horror releases of the new year.
