In the Prime Video series Neagley, Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) runs a no-nonsense private investigations office in Chicago, where her colleagues tolerate her more than they like her. But when a childhood friend dies under suspicious circumstances, she dives headfirst into a case that forces her to rely on a ragtag team, including Detective Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt), a cop with a criminal family background. Over the season, Neagley and Hudson form an unlikely partnership, one that hints at deeper feelings but is complicated by her haphephobia, a fear of touch.
In a recent interview, Holt shared insights into what makes Neagley stand apart from its parent show, Reacher. "From the get-go, we set out to stand alone and have our own grittier tone," he said. "We still have all the action and fighting, but we delve into a darker, more evil side of the Reacher universe." This psychological depth is a key differentiator, as the show digs into the psyches of its characters, exploring what makes them tick.
Holt also discussed the potential for Hudson to cross paths with Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson). "I think it'd be an interesting dynamic to see them interact more because they are such different characters," he noted. "My character wears his heart on his sleeve a little bit more. He's a bit more of a scrappy guy. Reacher is much more regimented and by the book." Fans of the franchise would undoubtedly love to see that clash of styles.
The season's central arc is deeply personal for Neagley, which Holt believes is crucial. "What fans are going to really appreciate about this first season is finding out why she is the way she is," he said. "We dive into her backstory, and we dive into the backstories of all of our lead cast." This exploration not only enriches the characters but also explains their interactions, making the ensemble feel more cohesive.
Hudson's own backstory is equally compelling. Coming from a family of career criminals, he's had to forge his own path, a journey that mirrors Neagley's in some ways. "They're able to see each other in a unique way," Holt explained. This mutual understanding is the foundation of their partnership, and it leaves plenty of room for growth in a potential second season.
As for what he'd like to see in Season 2, Holt is open to exploring more of Hudson's family history and the dynamics within the core four. He also teased a desire for a big action scene that could push the characters to their limits. With the show's darker tone and deeper character work, Neagley is carving out its own identity in the Reacher universe.
