The Reacher universe is about to get a whole lot bigger. Prime Video is launching its first spin-off, Neagley, starring Maria Sten as the fan-favorite military police investigator. The new series, which drops all eight episodes on September 16, puts Neagley front and center as she tackles a case that hits close to home—and she'll have to do it without Jack Reacher by her side.
If you need a refresher on Frances Neagley before diving in, here's everything you should know about her journey so far.
Neagley's Military Past and Bond with Reacher
Frances Neagley is a former U.S. Army Master Sergeant who served alongside Reacher in the 110th Special Investigations Unit. After the tragic death of Reacher's first protégé, Sergeant Dominique Kohl, Reacher took Neagley under his wing, and the two formed a deep, unbreakable bond. Neagley often refers to her training as coming from "the school of Reacher."
She first appeared in Reacher Season 1, Episode 4, "In a Tree," and has been a recurring ally ever since. After the 110th was disbanded, Neagley became a private investigator in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
Throughout the series, Neagley has been instrumental in helping Reacher take down major threats. In Season 1, she helped dismantle the Kliner crime operation. In Season 2, she reunited with Reacher and other surviving 110th members to avenge their fallen colleagues. And in Season 3, she assisted Reacher in his vendetta against Francis Xavier Quinn, the man who murdered Sergeant Kohl.
More Than Just a Sidekick
While Neagley and Reacher share many skills—both are elite investigators and hand-to-hand combatants—they're very different people. Neagley is an ace sniper, a fact she demonstrates in the Season 1 finale with the memorable line, "Put the biscuit in the basket." Off duty, she loves video games and has a sweet tooth for sugary cereals.
Unlike Reacher, who often pursues romantic interests, Neagley has stated she isn't attracted to anyone. She also lives with haphephobia, an intense fear of being touched. This condition makes physical contact extremely difficult, but in a poignant Season 2 moment, she overcomes it to comfort a dying Detective Guy Russo, showing her profound compassion beneath her tough exterior.
Neagley's Solo Adventure
In her own series, Neagley investigates the suspicious death of a childhood friend, which leads her to a potentially deadly conspiracy involving the mysterious Echo Canyon Farm. She'll be joined by new allies, including Chicago PD Detective Hudson Riley, her colleague Renee, and a young street hustler named Keno. Alan Ritchson will reprise his role as Reacher, but only in a guest capacity.
The show promises to delve into Neagley's backstory, something even author Lee Child avoided in his novels. As Child explained, "I didn’t want to go too deeply into what made her who she is. I felt that would burst the bubble somehow." Showrunner Nick Santora, however, is ready to explore "why she became who she is," potentially revealing the origins of her haphephobia.
With the spin-off premiering after the Season 4 finale, the timing couldn't be better for fans hungry for more Reacher action. And if you're curious about how the series stacks up, check out our Neagley review.
All eight episodes of Neagley are now streaming on Prime Video.
