After a gut-wrenching start to From Season 4, Episode 3, "Merrily We Go," offers a moment to breathe—though for Tabitha Matthews, there's no time for rest. The episode, which aired this week on MGM+, finds the town reeling from Jim's brutal death, and star Catalina Sandino Moreno reveals that this loss isn't just emotional—it's a grim confirmation that Tabitha and Jade are closer to the truth than the town's evil wants them to be.
In an exclusive interview, Moreno shared how she prepared for the heart-wrenching scenes in Episode 2, where Tabitha discovers Jim's body and delivers a tearful eulogy. "You can't prepare for that," she said. "I've played this character for years, and my connection with Eoin [Bailey] and Jim—he was the protector, the one always trying to shield her. Not having him felt like saying goodbye to an old friend."
Director Jack Bender gave Moreno the freedom to make the moment feel authentic, using a single camera to capture her raw performance. "As soon as I saw him lying there, it hit me: 'I don't have my companion. I don't have my friend. I don't have the father of my children. And I keep losing!'", she recalled. "She lost a child once, and now she's losing the father of her kids. This is not a game."
Jim's Death Sets Up Season 4's Biggest Theme
Moreno also addressed how Jim's murder reinforces Tabitha's determination to uncover the town's secrets. "Of course, that anger toward Jade—it's like, 'You figure it out. It should be you. Poor Jim was trying to protect our children, protect me,'" she explained. "But that's part of grief, part of pain, part of desperation. She doesn't know what to do anymore."
The actress noted that knowledge in the town comes at a cost, echoing a warning from earlier seasons. "Sarah's brother said it—when you push for answers, the town pushes back. We're dealing with a different monster now. Are you going to be scared to push and maybe just stay here forever, or defy this town, knowing it could be deadly? That's the premise for this whole season."
Tabitha's Cursed Past and Complicated Relationships
When asked if Tabitha shares Julie's fear that their family is the cause of the town's horrors, Moreno was clear. "No, I think she's felt cursed ever since her child died," she said, referencing a powerful church scene where Tabitha questions God. "I don't think everything started because they arrived. Things have been hitting the fan since before they arrived. But now that they're here with Jade, it's like, 'We didn't come in by ourselves.' That started to shift things."
As for Tabitha's strained relationship with Henry, who believes she is his deceased wife Miranda, Moreno explained the complexity. "She still feels strange, knowing that she is the recreation of Miranda. It's a burden she carries."
With Jim gone, Tabitha's grief transforms into a relentless drive for answers—one that could cost her everything.
