Hideo Kojima’s post-apocalyptic saga Death Stranding is expanding beyond consoles with a brand-new anime series. During a 10th-anniversary event at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo, Kojima Productions dropped the first official trailer for Death Stranding Isolations, an animated spin-off set to stream on Disney+ in 2027. The teaser offers a haunting glimpse of a world still reeling from the catastrophic Death Stranding event, where isolation isn’t just a theme—it’s a survival strategy.

A New Chapter in the Death Stranding Universe

Isolations takes place in North America shortly after Sam Porter Bridges reconnects the continent via the Chiral Network. But rebuilding connections doesn’t mean everyone wants to be part of the new world. The story centers on a young girl who has grown accustomed to solitude after the apocalypse shattered society. Her life of deliberate isolation is upended by chance encounters with a cast of characters who each offer a different perspective on what it means to reconnect. Among them: an older man with an unconventional approach to bringing people together, a female soldier trapped in a cycle of violence, and an angry boy struggling with his circumstances.

The synopsis opens with a chilling line: “My mom became a crater.” It’s a stark reminder of the game’s lore, where intense emotional connections between the living and the dead can trigger devastating voidouts. This new ensemble promises to explore the aftermath of Sam’s journey from the ground up, focusing on those who live outside his mission.

Behind the Scenes: A Talented Team

Takayuki Sano directs the series, with E&H producing traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. Renowned illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov provides original character designs, and Kojima himself serves as executive producer. Author Tow Ubukata (Psycho-Pass, Mardock Scramble) is handling series composition and screenplay. Sano spoke about the weight of working within Kojima’s universe: “One of the unique abilities of entertainment is its power to enhance the spirituality of those who consume it, and I think this is something that Mr. Kojima’s works have always achieved.”

The announcement comes as the Death Stranding franchise continues to grow. An animated film, Death Stranding Mosquito, is also in development, alongside A24’s live-action adaptation. Isolations will stand on its own with original characters and a fresh narrative, offering newcomers an entry point while rewarding longtime fans with deeper exploration of the game’s themes.

Disney+’s Expanding Anime Slate

With Isolations, Disney+ continues to bolster its anime offerings. The streamer has been aggressively acquiring high-profile titles, from the upcoming Princess and the Frog special to the Great British Bake Off, but its investment in anime signals a strategic push for global subscribers. The platform recently celebrated the success of VisionQuest, a sci-fi hit that dominated October, proving that genre storytelling resonates with its audience.

Death Stranding Isolations is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2027. Fans can expect more details in the coming months, but for now, the trailer offers a tantalizing taste of a world where connection is both a lifeline and a threat.
