Netflix is doubling down on video game adaptations, and its latest project is a big one. The streamer has officially greenlit a live-action series based on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), the battle royale phenomenon that took the gaming world by storm in 2017. Even more exciting: Donald Glover is attached to star, direct, co-write, and co-executive produce the series alongside his brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen Glover.
This marks another major coup for Netflix, which has already found success with game-inspired hits like Castlevania, Arcane, and The Last of Us (though the latter is HBO). The streamer is also developing adaptations of Assassin's Creed and Gears of War, but the PUBG project stands out thanks to its high-profile creative team. Glover, known for his work on Community, Atlanta, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, brings serious star power and a unique artistic vision to the table.
What is PUBG?
For the uninitiated, PUBG—short for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds—is one of the games that popularized the battle royale genre, alongside Fortnite. The premise is simple but brutal: dozens of players (in teams of one to four) drop onto a massive map, scavenge for weapons and gear, and fight to be the last team standing. Think The Hunger Games, but interactive. Since its launch, PUBG has maintained a dedicated player base and remains a popular alternative to Fortnite.
The battle royale genre exploded during the pandemic, when millions were stuck indoors and looking for competitive online thrills. That cultural moment helped cement PUBG's place in gaming history—and now, it's getting the prestige TV treatment.
Why Donald Glover?
Glover is no stranger to ambitious projects. He's proven himself as an actor, writer, director, and musician (under the moniker Childish Gambino). His involvement suggests Netflix is aiming for something more than a straightforward action series. With Stephen Glover co-writing and co-executive producing, fans can expect the same sharp storytelling and genre-bending flair that defined Atlanta.
While details about the plot and characters are still under wraps, the combination of Glover's creative instincts and PUBG's high-stakes premise is undeniably intriguing. Could this be the next Arcane-level hit? Only time will tell.
Netflix has not announced a release date for the PUBG series, but production is expected to ramp up in the coming months. In the meantime, fans can tide themselves over with other Netflix offerings.
