After the disappointing news that Hulu's Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was scrapped before production even began, fans of the Slayer and her vampire-with-a-soul paramour finally have something to sink their teeth into. Dynamite Entertainment has officially confirmed that Angel #1, the first issue of a new sequel comic series, will hit shelves on August 19.
The comic picks up where the TV series left off, following Angel's journey from Sunnydale to Los Angeles and beyond. Written by acclaimed comics writer Kelly Thompson, with art by Giulia Giacomino and covers by David Nakayama, Clayton Crain, Meredith McClaren, Meghan Hetrick, Jenny Frison, and Nakayama, the series promises to deliver the emotional depth and supernatural intrigue that made the original show a cult classic.
What's the Story About?
The official synopsis for Angel #1 reads: “Once the terrifying vampire Angelus, Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul. That soul eventually led him to Sunnydale and a tragic star-crossed affair with Buffy, his vampire-slaying true love. Once the tragedy had run its course, Angel built himself a new life in Los Angeles as a supernatural detective, helping the helpless. But things don’t always go according to plan. And sometimes, you do have to go home again. This is that story.”
Thompson, who is also writing Dynamite's upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, has teased that the new series will feel like an event. “It’s been a hard book to talk about,” she said. “The new way I’ve decided to try to talk about it, while hiding the mysterious interior, is telling people to think of the first issues like an event book. Almost like we’re starting with an event book with something that draws the cast of Buffy and Angel together for like a very personal emotional thing, and then we sort of spin out from there.”
Why Kelly Thompson Is the Perfect Choice
Editor Nate Cosby didn't mince words when explaining why Thompson was the top pick for both series. “There was one name on my wish list of writers for Buffy: Kelly Thompson. There was one name on my wish list of writers for Angel: Kelly Thompson. Her passion for these characters is second-to-none. The interweaving story she’s crafted for both books is going to knock everyone’s socks off.”
Thompson's track record with beloved franchises—she's written for Captain Marvel, Jessica Jones, and Star Wars—makes her a natural fit to carry the torch for Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt's iconic vampire detective. The original Angel series aired from 1999 to 2004 on The WB, starring David Boreanaz as Angel, Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, J. August Richards as Charles Gunn, Amy Acker as Fred, and Andy Hallett as Lorne.
For fans hungry for more supernatural storytelling, this comic series arrives alongside other legacy revivals like HBO's Harry Potter reboot, which is shaping up to be 2026's most anticipated fantasy series.
