Female-led ensemble comedies have long been a beloved staple of Hollywood, from Bridesmaids to Girls Trip, The First Wives Club to Bad Moms. There's something undeniably thrilling about watching women let loose, break the rules, and own the screen. Spa Weekend is the latest entry in this glorious tradition, and its four leads—Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, Isla Fisher, and Michelle Buteau—are here to prove that the genre is alive and kicking.
The film follows Jane (Mann), a single mom; Sophie (Faris), a workaholic; Coco (Buteau), a woman with a lot of justified anger; and Mel (Fisher), the eternal party girl, as they escape for a birthday spa trip. But relaxation is off the menu when overbearing bosses, messy breakups, and old friend drama crash the party. Can hot yoga, poolside lounging, and a little bit of chaos save their friendship? Or will they end up as wrecked as a golf cart on a sand dune?
Collider recently caught up with the hilarious quartet to talk about the film's surprisingly emotional core, the steamy romances, the wildest stunts, and their dream sequel ideas. Here's what they had to say.
A Message That Hits Home
Michelle Buteau, who plays the perpetually furious Coco, found a lot of resonance in her character's journey. "The world feels very dark right now," she said. "You could genuinely cry about something every day. So when people say joy is radical care, it's about reminding yourself that yes, there are problems, but you also have to find joy. That's self-care—making sure you laugh, have a good time, and spend time with people you love."
Each woman in the film is grappling with her own demons: Jane learning to put herself first, Mel trying to fit in without losing her spark, Sophie attempting to stand up for herself, and Coco figuring out how to let go of the anger that's been weighing her down. It's a surprisingly moving message wrapped in a comedy package.
Romance and Chemistry
While the friendships are the heart of the movie, the romances add plenty of heat. Leslie Mann's Jane finds an unexpected connection with Kai, a hand massage scene that Mann admits was "bizarre but very sexy." "You just kind of believe the moment," she explained. Anna Faris was quick to praise her co-star's natural sensuality: "I think you have a natural sensuality. It's part of your essence. It's a little intimidating." Mann laughed it off, but Faris insisted, "It's behind your eyes. You have finesse."
Sophie, on the other hand, doesn't get a love story in the film—but Faris has a backstory. "Greg has been pretty stressed out," she revealed. "He likes to spend a lot of time in his man cave. He's been unemployed." Buteau chimed in with her signature bluntness: "Sophie's getting pounded every weekend! Get out of here!" Faris laughed and added, "I think the sequel is Sophie's journey."
Physical Comedy and Sequel Dreams
The cast clearly relished the physical comedy. "They're really good at hijinks," Buteau said, and the film is full of them—from golf cart crashes to yoga poses gone wrong. Isla Fisher, who loved her character's edgy wardrobe so much she kept some of it, admitted she wasn't totally comfortable in her leopard-print yoga outfit but "surrendered to it."
When asked about sequel ideas, the ladies were full of suggestions. Faris hinted at a Sophie-centric follow-up, while Buteau joked about a "Sophie's Choice" scenario. But the big question was: which comedy legends would they want to join the fun? While they didn't name names, the possibilities are endless—and fans are already dreaming of a Spa Weekend sequel that brings in even more iconic funny women.
For now, Spa Weekend is a hilarious, heartfelt addition to the genre, and it's available to stream now.
