Adam Demos has built a career on playing charming love interests, from Netflix hits like Falling Inn Love and A Perfect Pairing to series such as UnREAL and Sex/Life. His latest role in Spa Weekend sees him as Kai, a witty yoga instructor who sparks an undeniable connection with Jane, played by Leslie Mann. Despite the odds—an age gap and different cities—their chemistry is electric, and Kai encourages Jane to live for herself while she inspires him to chase his abandoned dreams.
In a recent interview, Demos shared insights into building that on-screen magic with Mann, the improvisational freedom on set, and what he took away from working with such a talented cast. He also revealed his favorite day of filming and teased what a potential sequel might hold.
Finding the Rhythm with Leslie Mann
Demos credits Mann's incredible talent and their off-screen rapport for the natural banter that defines their scenes. "She's obviously so incredible that you just sort of rock up, and the best thing I could do is be present," he said. The directors encouraged spontaneity, allowing the actors to interrupt, improvise, and let scenes flow organically. "They allowed for this fluid nature of the scenes," Demos explained, noting that this approach made the interactions feel authentic and effortless.
The improvisation wasn't just limited to the leads. Demos recalled his first day on set, which involved a scene with strippers, and the challenge of keeping a straight face. "The things that they were improvising… And then I had to enter about a minute into the scene. Like, 'How am I gonna get through this movie without laughing?'" he laughed. "What a gift, man. It was such a good time."
The Hand Massage Scene and Finding Groundedness
One of the film's standout moments is the hand massage scene, which manages to be both silly and surprisingly sexy. Demos explained his approach: "I think my way into it—even when I offer it up to her in the scene—is that I have to know that it sounds stupid in order for it to work." He gave credit to Mann for making the scene work, adding, "She does all the heavy lifting in that scene. You have to believe that you can do the thing."
Dreaming of a Sequel
When asked about a potential sequel, Demos was enthusiastic. He imagined Kai's restaurant would be health-focused, with "biodynamic and all that sort of stuff" on the menu. As for the decor? "There'll probably be a lot of crystals," he joked, suggesting a smoothie bar vibe. "Jamba Juice, you have some competition," he quipped.
For road trip playlists, Demos revealed his love for country music, citing Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton as current favorites. He also shared a fun anecdote about watching movies too young, mentioning Anchorman as a film he probably shouldn't have seen at a young age, but it didn't scar him—his single mom was often at work, leaving him to his own devices.
Favorite Day on Set
Demos's favorite day was the scene where he first meets the group of women. "Everyone was there, and all of the improv before I entered the scene… It was a beautiful day, and you're on the beach on the Gold Coast, and I couldn't stop laughing," he recalled. "I felt so happy. It was a really cool day."
Working alongside powerhouses like Mann and the rest of the cast was a learning experience. Demos noted that he absorbed a lot from their professionalism and talent, though he didn't specify details. The film, which is now streaming, is a delightful romp that showcases Demos's charm and comedic timing.
