Pokémon has always been about evolution, but the franchise took a surprising turn earlier this year with Pokémon Pokopia, a cozy life simulator that swapped battles for building and exploration. The game quickly became a hit, and now it's about to get even bigger with its first paid expansion, Bubbly Basin, launching this week.
On August 5, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company will release the first chapter of the game's three-part Expansion Pass, taking players beneath the waves to a brand-new underwater town. But that's not all—everyone, even those who don't buy the DLC, will receive a substantial free update that opens up new areas and abilities.
What's New in Bubbly Basin?
Bubbly Basin introduces a unique mechanic: players can place a bubble over their heads to explore the ocean floor and build sand houses. The official description highlights watermelons grown with Water-type Pokémon, bubble machines powered by Generate-type Pokémon, and even a Sharpedo submarine that creates a Secret Base-like room. New Pokémon to encounter include Popplio, Mudkip, Corsola, Carvanha, Corphish, Chinchou, Buizel, and the Mythical Manaphy.
Players can also dive into a deep-sea trench, follow glowing coral for adventures, and craft smoothies as a new prepared food. Building gets a fresh twist with buoyant blocks that allow structures to float at different depths—something only possible underwater.
Free Update for Everyone
Even without the Expansion Pass, version 2.0 arrives the same day, adding the Dive ability. After learning it from Manaphy, players can explore and build underwater across the existing map, effectively doubling the playable space. This free update is a major addition that ensures the community grows together.
This expansion is part of a broader trend of games expanding their worlds post-launch, much like the upcoming Gondor & Rohan expansion for the One Ring RPG. For Pokémon fans, this is a chance to experience the series in a whole new way, and the timing couldn't be better as the game continues to evolve.
With more content promised in the Expansion Pass, Pokémon Pokopia is set to keep players busy for months. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the cozy life, Bubbly Basin offers a refreshing dive into uncharted waters.
