For decades, Scooby-Doo has been a beloved Great Dane with a knack for solving mysteries—and a serious appetite. But in live-action, the iconic canine has always been brought to life through computer-generated imagery, often with mixed results. Now, Netflix's upcoming series Scooby-Doo: Origins is changing that by casting a real dog to play the title character for the first time ever.
A new horror-themed teaser shared by Netflix on social media shows a fearsome creature stalking its prey, only to reveal that it's actually an adorable puppy Scooby-Doo, cradled by Shaggy (Tanner Hagen). This marks a major shift from the previous live-action films—2002's Scooby-Doo and its sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, as well as the TV movies The Mystery Begins and Curse of the Lake Monster—which all used CGI dogs that often fell into the uncanny valley. By using a real dog, Scooby-Doo: Origins aims to deliver a more authentic and endearing portrayal.
Netflix has not yet named the canine actor or actors who will step into Scooby's oversized pawprints, but early indications suggest he is a very good boy. The voice of Scooby has been provided by veteran voice actor Frank Welker since 2002, taking over from the late Don Messick. It remains unclear whether Scooby will speak in Origins or if Welker will be involved in any capacity.

The series follows longtime teenage pals Shaggy (Hagen, The Pitt) and Daphne (Mckenna Grace, Scream 7) as they enjoy their last summer at camp. Their fun is interrupted when they get caught up in a bizarre mystery involving Scooby-Doo, an orphaned Great Dane puppy who may be the only witness to a strange and possibly supernatural murder. To solve the case, they enlist the help of nerdy townie Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson, Ant-Man) and the mysterious but handsome Fred (Maxwell Jenkins, Reacher). The race is on to find the real perpetrator before all their deepest secrets are revealed. The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell).
Scooby-Doo: Origins is showrun by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the duo behind shows like High Fidelity, Citadel, and From. It is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman (via Berlanti Productions), along with André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson (via Midnight Radio), and Toby Haynes, who also directs the pilot. The series is currently in production in Atlanta, Georgia, and is set to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
