While Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot is generating buzz, series creator Chris Carter has confirmed he's actively working on a potential Season 12 that would bring back the iconic duo—and he's already shared his ideas with the actors.
In a recent interview on the Seriously Obsessed with Annie and Jenn podcast, Carter revealed that he's met separately with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to discuss his vision for continuing the story. "I've already teased it to David, and I've teased it to Gillian, but they're very busy people," he said. "They know what I'm aiming for and at, and they didn't before when the show came to an end there."
Carter made it clear that he has no interest in moving forward without his two leads. "I mean I can't and don't want to do it without them," he stated emphatically. This comes as a relief to fans who feared the reboot might be the only new X-Files content on the horizon.
A Delicate Balance with Coogler's Reboot
Carter is being careful not to step on Coogler's toes. He expressed "complete respect for him and his vision," and wants any continuation of his story to coexist without conflicting with the upcoming reboot. The creator has been in a reflective mood while promoting his new director's cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, subtitled Vrach Frankenshteyn, which is now streaming on Hulu.
Interestingly, Coogler's reboot could actually help pave the way for Mulder and Scully's return. A brief cameo from the original stars could bridge the old and new versions of the series, giving fans an update on where the characters are now while setting up a natural path for their own continuation. Carter told Collider, "I really want to see what he's doing, and I don't want to take away from it in any way," leaving the door open for the two projects to potentially benefit each other.

While details remain scarce, Carter's enthusiasm is palpable. He's been revisiting the franchise while working on the new cut, and that experience has sparked a desire to continue Mulder and Scully's story. However, he's also realistic about the challenges.
