Mahershala Ali is stepping into new territory with his latest film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a crime thriller that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Oscar winner leads a cast that includes John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Adia, and Tramell Tillman, with Bassam Tariq directing from his own script.
Set in Texas, the story follows Latif (Ali), a devout Muslim family man who also works as a contract killer with a strict moral code. He refuses to use guns and only targets those he believes the world is better without. When his wife dies unexpectedly, Latif tries to leave his violent profession behind to raise his three children. But his employer, Mike (Laith Nakli), has other plans, forcing Latif into a desperate race across Houston to protect his family from the forces closing in.
At the Collider Media Studio presented by Campari and The Cayman Islands, the cast and director sat down to discuss the film's visual language, Tariq's inspirations, and the trust required to bring his vision to life. For Ali, the project offered a career first: a full-blown action role that demanded he perform his own stunts.
"For the first time ever, the scene I was most concerned with was our climactic action scene," Ali admitted. "We had very limited time in terms of rehearsal and preparation. I know the audience doesn't care about how much time you have; they just expect it to be done in a way that is excellent." He added that the epic nature of the fight, combined with the tight schedule, made him nervous. "It's one thing for the director to do his job, but then those fights are almost a separate piece... it's like your heart is outside of your body a little bit."
Tariq clarified that Ali wasn't stepping back for those sequences. "That was also Mahershala. That was him doing all the stunts, because his face is in it. He's got to be doing all the stuff," the director said. "We couldn't just ever be like, 'Use a double there.' No, this is him. So he's got to not just also perform every day in these really intense, dramatic scenes, but he's also got all these action scenes."
Ali, a former athlete, embraced the challenge. "That was unfamiliar to me. I hadn't had a chance to do that. I've always wanted to do that," he said. "I'm very proud of what all involved were able to achieve in making this film."
The cast also reflected on working with Tariq, whose previous film Mogul Mowgli earned critical acclaim. Esposito shared his meditative pre-scene ritual, while Cho and Adia discussed the importance of trusting a director's vision. Tariq opened up about the film's visual language, drawing on spiritual and cultural inspirations to craft a near-perfect action-packed crime drama.
