Idris Elba is keeping his schedule packed with a mix of blockbuster films and literary ventures. While fans eagerly await his upcoming sci-fi thriller Above the Below (hitting theaters December 4) and his return as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (March 19, 2027), the actor is also diving into the world of espionage fiction. Teaming up with bestselling author Adam Hamdy, Elba has created a new MI6 thriller series called Exiles, and the first book is officially slated for a May 2027 release.
The series, which has already secured a three-book deal with Bantam, introduces readers to Joe Kane, an MI6 field operative who handles the agency's most complex and dangerous missions. The first installment will be available in hardcover and audiobook formats simultaneously, ensuring fans can enjoy the story however they prefer. Executive Editor Julian Pavia acquired the rights, signaling strong confidence in the project's potential.
Elba's foray into writing comes as no surprise given his deep involvement in the entertainment industry. He's not just an actor but a producer and creator, often seeking projects that challenge him creatively. With Exiles, he's expanding his repertoire into the literary world, and given his knack for intense, charismatic roles, it's easy to imagine Joe Kane as a character tailor-made for the big screen. In fact, a screen adaptation is already in development, though details remain under wraps.
This isn't Elba's only upcoming project. He's also set to star alongside Chris Hemsworth in a third Extraction movie for Netflix, which has already wrapped filming and is expected to debut later in 2027. Additionally, he's reprising his iconic role as John Luther in a new Luther film, which has also completed production but lacks a release date. The movie will see the return of Ruth Wilson, a fan favorite from the original series who was notably absent from the first film, Luther: The Fallen Sun.
For fans of spy thrillers, Exiles promises to deliver the same tension and intrigue that made Elba's portrayal of Luther so compelling. The series is poised to join the ranks of other gripping espionage narratives, offering a fresh take on the genre. Elba's ability to balance multiple high-profile projects is a testament to his versatility and work ethic. From animated features like High in the Clouds to fantasy epics like Children of Blood and Bone (opening January 15, 2027), he shows no signs of slowing down. His upcoming slate also includes the brutal new Western on Prime Video, which is set to arrive in November 2026.
As the release date for Exiles approaches, anticipation is building. Whether you're a longtime fan of Elba's on-screen work or a reader who loves a good spy novel, this series is shaping up to be a must-read. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new venture.
