Magic: The Gathering is making amends for one of its most controversial product launches. After the chaotic debut of The Zeta Set—a Secret Lair collaboration with MSCHF—Wizards of the Coast has announced a second chance for collectors. The limited-time pre-order will open on December 9, 2026, and remain available for just 24 hours, with orders expected to ship in the second half of 2027.
The original drop, which took place on September 2, 2026, was plagued by technical failures. Fans encountered queue issues, checkout errors, and missing confirmation emails, leaving many unable to secure the product. Within hours, copies were being resold online for over $600—a staggering markup from the original $19.92 price tag. The backlash was swift, prompting an official apology from Wizards of the Coast.
This isn't the first time the company has turned to a 24-hour pre-order model to address supply problems. In August, the Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku used a similar approach, with a small batch shipping immediately and the rest arriving in 2027. Now, The Zeta Set is getting the same treatment, offering fans a fairer chance to purchase the product without battling bots or scalpers.
Why Secret Lair Drops Have Become So Controversial
The trouble began in 2023 when Wizards of the Coast shifted Secret Lair releases from a print-to-demand system to a limited-print-run model. The goal was to speed up shipping, but the change created a new set of problems. Popular drops now sell out in minutes, leaving many fans empty-handed. Recent examples include the Secret Lair Commander: Goblin Storm deck and the Monty Python collaboration, both of which vanished almost instantly.
Timing has also been a sore spot. Secret Lair drops typically go live at 9 AM PT, which is convenient for some North American fans but a nightmare for others. For instance, Australian players often face launch windows between 2 AM and 4 AM, depending on daylight saving time. The old print-to-demand system gave everyone a longer window to order, making it far more accessible.
Wizards of the Coast has slowly been expanding its 24-hour pre-order model to address these complaints. The upcoming Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends will also get a 24-hour window. However, not all releases are following suit. Non-Commander drops, such as the Corn Maze Superdrop featuring Jim Henson's Labyrinth and K-Pop Demon Hunters, will continue using the limited-print-run model.
For fans of the latest crossovers, this mixed approach can be frustrating. But the revival of The Zeta Set is a promising sign that Wizards is listening to its community. Whether this marks a permanent shift remains to be seen, but for now, collectors have a second chance to grab a piece of Magic history.
Mark your calendars: The Zeta Set pre-orders open on December 9, 2026, and close exactly 24 hours later. Don't miss your shot—this one might not come around again.
