John Wells, the prolific producer behind such iconic series as ER, The West Wing, and Shameless, is returning to Netflix with a deeply personal new drama. Titled Unaccustomed Earth, the series is based on Jhumpa Lahiri's 2008 short story collection of the same name and is set to premiere on December 17.
The show marks a departure from Wells' usual gritty family sagas, offering instead a multi-generational tale centered on an Indian-American community grappling with love, loss, and the weight of tradition. At its heart is Parul Chaudhury, played by Freida Pinto, whose life is upended by a cancer diagnosis. Forced to confront her mortality, Parul revisits the choices that led her to this moment—including sacrificing her college sweetheart to honor her father's wishes. In a bid to reclaim her past, she leaves her life in India and returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, a decision that will ripple through the lives of everyone she loves.
Wells, who serves as an executive producer, has built a career on spotting compelling stories, and Unaccustomed Earth is no exception. The series is adapted by Madhuri Shekar, known for her work on 3 Body Problem, who also acts as showrunner. Lahiri herself is on board as an executive producer, ensuring the adaptation stays true to her acclaimed source material.
The ensemble cast is led by Pinto, with Siddharth playing Amit, Parul's first love, and Indraneil Sengupta as Jai. The cast also includes Sarayu Blue, Parveen Kaur, Adi Roy, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig, Justin Bartha, Jayant Kripalani, Swayam Bhatia, and Palomi Ghosh.
Wells' recent Netflix venture, Untamed, a neo-Western starring Eric Bana, was a hit and has been renewed for a second season. Now, with Unaccustomed Earth, he's tackling a different kind of family drama—one that explores how culture and tradition shape our most intimate relationships.
For fans of thoughtful, character-driven storytelling, this is one to mark on the calendar. Unaccustomed Earth arrives on Netflix on Thursday, December 17.
