Get ready to feel truly outrageous all over again. Amazon Studios has officially greenlit a live-action series based on Jem and the Holograms, the beloved 1980s toy line and animated show. The project, which has been in development since last year, will be produced by Kilter Films, the banner of Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

The series marks the latest attempt by Hasbro Entertainment to translate one of its classic properties into a streaming hit. While the toy giant has found massive success with the Transformers film franchise, other adaptations like G.I. Joe, Battleship, and Dungeons & Dragons have had a tougher time. Amazon, meanwhile, has been aggressively expanding its young-adult programming, making it a natural home for this glittery, music-driven drama.

The final season of 'The Bear' is almost here, and the new trailer shows the staff struggling to keep the restaurant alive after Carmy's shocking decision.

What Is Jem and the Holograms About?

Originally created as a competitor to Barbie, Jem and the Holograms centered on Jerrica Benton, a young woman who inherits a supercomputer called Synergy from her late father. Using Synergy's holographic technology, she creates a glamorous alter ego named Jem and forms a band with her sister Kimber and their friends. The show's central conflict revolved around Jerrica's secret identity—especially her relationship with band manager Rio, who is dating Jerrica but finds himself drawn to Jem.

The Holograms frequently battled their rivals, the Misfits, a tougher, more aggressive band managed by the unscrupulous Eric Raymond. The series, created by Christy Marx, ran for three seasons and 65 episodes, each featuring original songs performed by the animated bands. The dolls themselves came with cassette tapes of the soundtrack, making them a multimedia phenomenon.

A Second Chance at Live Action

This isn't the first time Jem has been adapted for live action. A 2015 film starring Aubrey Peeples and Juliette Lewis, directed by Jon M. Chu, was a critical and commercial disappointment. That film ended with a post-credits tease of the Misfits, played by Kesha and others, but a sequel never materialized.

Now, with the backing of Amazon and the creative firepower of Nolan and Joy, the property is getting a fresh start. The series will be executive produced by Nolan, Joy, and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, with Gabriel Marano executive producing for Hasbro. No casting or release date has been announced yet.

For fans of 80s nostalgia, this is shaping up to be a major event—especially as He-Man's 'Masters of the Universe' Defies Skeptics with Strong Box Office and Positive Reviews and other toy-based revivals continue to dominate pop culture. Amazon's commitment to YA-friendly content, including upcoming projects like Titus Welliver & J.K. Simmons Team for Amazon Crime Thriller 'The Westies', suggests they're betting big on genre fare with built-in fanbases.
