Peacock is taking viewers on a dark journey into the seedy underbelly of Florida with its upcoming crime thriller series M.I.A. The show, which drops all nine episodes on May 7, centers on Etta Tiger Jonze (played by Shannon Gisela, known for The Secrets We Keep), a woman consumed by vengeance after her drug-running family is brutally murdered.
In an exclusive sneak peek obtained by ShowtimeSpot, we find Etta on a beach in the Florida Keys with her friends Lovely (Brittany Adebumola, The Other Black Girl) and Stanley (Dylan Jackson, Godfather of Harlem). The mood is somber: Etta is the last surviving member of her family, and Lovely urges her to burn a photo of them as a ceremonial tribute. But Etta's mind is elsewhere—she's haunted by the memory of her family being gunned down by business rivals and then incinerated. That's the fire she truly burns with.
While the clip doesn't reveal Etta's next move, it's clear she's about to plunge headfirst into Miami's criminal underworld to track down her family's killers. The question is whether she'll emerge victorious or be consumed by the flames of her own rage. For that answer, you'll have to tune in to Peacock this May.
Who's Behind the Camera?
M.I.A. was created and written by Bill Dubuque (Ozark), with Karen Campbell (Dexter) serving as showrunner and writer. The series is directed by a talented team including Alethea Jones (High Potential), Gwyneth Horder-Payton (American Horror Story), Mairzee Almas (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Ben Semanoff (Black Rabbit), and John Dahl (The Last Seduction). Jones also executive produces alongside Dubuque and Campbell.
The cast is stacked with familiar faces: Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Danay Garcia (Fear the Walking Dead), Alberto Guerra (Griselda), Maurice Compte (Breaking Bad), Gerardo Celasco (The Waterfront), and Marta Milans (Shazam!). Guest stars include Billy Burke (Twilight), Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Loretta Devine (Waiting to Exhale), Tovah Feldshuh (Nobody Wants This), Tyler Perez (Abbott Elementary), Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire), David Denman (Mare of Easttown), and Miami Vice legend Edward James Olmos.
For those without Peacock, there's still a way to catch the pilot: NBC will air it as a special broadcast event on Thursday, May 14, at 10 p.m. ET.
