The penultimate episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 lands with a thunderclap, upending the status quo just as the war for Westeros seemed all but decided. For much of the season, Rhaenyra's Team Black has dominated, with victories at the Gullet and the reclamation of King's Landing. But the latest hour proves that the Greens are far from finished, as a miracle and a betrayal breathe new life into their cause.
The episode opens with Helaena, imprisoned and haunted, dreaming of riding her dragon Dreamfyre and unleashing "dracarys" on a horde of attackers. Rhaenyra attempts to sway her half-sister, but Helaena's deep-seated fear of dragons makes her an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, at Harrenhal, Aemond shares a disturbingly intimate moment with his mother Alicent—only for it to be revealed as another of the castle's eerie visions. When the real Alicent arrives, accompanied by Ser Adrian Redfort, the knight is swiftly dispatched, leaving Alicent to navigate a tense dinner with Aemond and Alys Rivers, where she must decide whether to kill her son or join his quest for the throne.
Elsewhere, Daemon returns to the Vale, searching for Rhaena and the wild dragon Sheepstealer. He learns from Lady Jeyne Arryn that Rhaena is hunting Vhagar, a suicidal mission. Baela and Addam of Hull are also tracking Vhagar, but their pursuit is interrupted by a different dragon—Sheepstealer. Rhaenyra, accompanied by Addam, confronts the rogue dragon, leading to a spectacular ground battle between Sheepstealer and the combined forces of Syrax, Caraxes, and Seasmoke. The fight ends with Sheepstealer wounded and Rhaena captured, but not before Daemon's attempts to intervene earn him Rhaenyra's ire.
The episode's final act delivers the most jaw-dropping twists. Aegon, weary of being a fugitive king, confronts a small army, seemingly resigned to death. But then, in a moment of pure fantasy, his dragon Sunfyre—believed dead—rises from the ashes, laying waste to the soldiers while Aegon cackles in triumph. It's a resurrection that could turn the tide for the Greens.
But the surprises don't end there. In a secret meeting, Ormund Hightower, who has captured Lord Corlys and sent his finger to Alyn as a grim message, meets with none other than Ulf the White. Ulf, last seen with Daemon's boot on his neck, now appears to switch allegiances, bringing another dragon under the enemy's control. This betrayal could prove devastating for Team Black.
