Prime Video's latest romance adaptation, Every Year After, has fans buzzing after its jaw-dropping season finale. Based on Carley Fortune's novel Every Summer After, the series follows Percy (Sadie Soverall) as she returns to the quaint town of Barry's Bay after more than a decade away. Drawn back by a tragedy, she must confront her complicated past with childhood sweetheart Sam Florek (Matt Cornett) and the secret she shares with his brother, Charlie (Michael Bradway). The season ends on a major cliffhanger that leaves Charlie's fate uncertain, and we sat down with Soverall and Cornett to get their take on what's next.
How They Landed the Roles
Both actors shared their unique audition journeys. Cornett revealed that the project was initially shrouded in secrecy, with code names for the show and characters. He sent in a tape, went through two sessions with showrunner Amy Harris and a director, and then did a chemistry read with Soverall and later with Bradway. Soverall, meanwhile, was juggling a play in New York, squeezing in virtual auditions from dressing rooms and tech boxes. "I did one in the dressing room, and I had like Nina Hoss walking behind, like stage legend," she recalled. Their chemistry read together was, in her words, "really fun."
Why Sam and Percy Can Make It Work
Despite the messy history—including Percy's past hookup with Charlie—both actors believe Sam and Percy have a deep, enduring bond. "They have this magnetism towards each other," Soverall said. "I think their cause are the same, I think they're very similar people in their souls and in what they want out of life." Cornett agreed, adding, "To their core, they are so similar, and I think they do have such a deep love for each other that will prevail over anything." He acknowledged that trust was broken but believes their shared history will help them rebuild.
Hopes for a Potential Season 2
If the series gets renewed, both stars envision Sam and Percy starting over in Barry's Bay. "Hopefully in Barry's Bay, spending more time there at the Tavern," Soverall said. "Maybe just becoming friends and figuring out how they become friends again and get into each other's lives again, and then maybe from there, who knows?" Cornett echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the need to rebuild trust through honest conversations. "I think they have to start at the beginning again," he noted.
The Cliffhanger and Charlie's Fate
The finale's twist—Charlie's heart attack—leaves his future hanging in the balance. Cornett shared his thoughts on how Sam might react: "I don't know what the plan is, but I have ideas in my head of what I hope we get to see between Charlie and Sam." Soverall added that Percy's return to Barry's Bay was ultimately about confronting her past and finding closure, which sets the stage for more drama ahead. For fans eager to see what happens next, the show's blend of romance and mystery is a perfect binge-watch alongside other Prime Video hits like House of David.
As for what truly brought Percy back, Soverall hinted it was more than just the tragedy—it was the unresolved feelings for Sam and the life she left behind. With the Tavern now in Percy's hands, Season 2 could explore her new role in the community and the fallout from Charlie's health crisis. Until then, fans can rewatch the season and speculate on what's next for this star-crossed pair.
