Denzel Washington isn't exactly known for playing the same character over and over. The two-time Oscar winner has built a career on choosing diverse, challenging roles—from a corrupt cop in Training Day to a noble warrior in Glory. So when he signed on to play a retired government operative turned vigilante in 2014's The Equalizer, it felt like a surprising move. Yet here we are, with three films under his belt and a streaming home that's about to make them more accessible than ever.
Starting July 1, 2026, all three Equalizer movies—The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, and The Equalizer 3—will be available to stream on HBO Max. The trilogy reunites Washington with director Antoine Fuqua, who transformed the 1980s TV series into a modern action franchise built around Robert McCall's particular set of skills. In each film, McCall tries to live a quiet life, only to be dragged back into violence when he encounters gangsters, corrupt officials, and others who need a dose of justice—or as McCall calls it, equalizing.
The first film, released in 2014, introduced McCall as a man who just wants to sip his tea and read Moby Dick in peace. But when he meets a young sex worker (Chloë Grace Moretz) caught up with the Russian mafia, he can't stay on the sidelines. The sequel, The Equalizer 2 (2018), took a more personal turn after someone close to McCall is murdered. The trilogy concluded with The Equalizer 3 (2023), which found McCall living in southern Italy, where he takes on a local crime family. While the formula is familiar, the execution is undeniably effective.
Washington leads a stellar cast across the trilogy. Marton Csokas plays Teddy Rensen, a pimp; David Harbour appears as Masters, a corrupt CIA operative; Melissa Leo portrays Susan Plummer, McCall's closest friend; Bill Pullman plays her husband, Brian; Pedro Pascal is Dave York, McCall's former partner; Dakota Fanning stars as Emma Collins, a CIA analyst; and Gaia Scodellaro appears as Aminah, a café owner. The ensemble adds depth to the bone-crunching action.
For fans of thriller masterpieces from the 2010s, the Equalizer films are a must-watch. They also fit alongside other action-heavy streaming options, like underrated action shows that get better with every rewatch. And if you're looking for more intense storytelling, Hannibal offers a different kind of tension.
The Equalizer trilogy begins streaming on HBO Max on July 1. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to McCall's world, this is your chance to binge one of the most satisfying action sagas of the past decade.
