What Could a Second Season Explore?
When Obi-Wan Kenobi debuted in 2022, it exceeded expectations, delivering a high-stakes narrative that recontextualized moments from the original trilogy without breaking canon. The show followed Kenobi during his exile on Tatooine, a period that fans have long been curious about. However, crafting a second season that matches the first's impact is a tall order. But whether a voice-over role would satisfy the actor's desire for a more substantial return is uncertain.
Could Kenobi Return to the Big Screen?
With no new Star Wars TV shows currently in development, Disney might be looking to scale back to avoid franchise fatigue. The underwhelming box office performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu earlier this year has shaken confidence in the brand. Critics have long urged the franchise to move forward with new characters and timelines, but the success of Obi-Wan Kenobi and McGregor's earnest interest present a compelling case for a return.
Disney has at least five Star Wars films in the works, and while some are set in eras that preclude Kenobi's appearance, others remain mysterious. The untitled project from Taika Waititi and Tony McNamara could be a possibility, as could a potential Lando Calrissian spinoff set during Kenobi's exile. Simon Kinberg's mysterious trilogy is likely set after the Skywalker Saga, but the door isn't entirely closed.
Whatever Disney and Lucasfilm decide, ignoring an actor of McGregor's caliber, who is eager to reprise a beloved role, would be a missed opportunity. Obi-Wan Kenobi proved that prequels can offer fresh perspectives without being mired in nostalgia. As the franchise navigates its next steps, bringing back Kenobi could be the spark it needs.
