Colin Farrell is riding high after his Emmy-nominated turn in HBO's The Penguin, but he's not slowing down. The actor is back on Apple TV+ with Season 2 of his genre-bending crime thriller Sugar, and he's already thinking long-term. In a recent chat with Collider, Farrell shared his vision for the series—and it involves a lot more episodes.
“I’d love to do four or five seasons,” Farrell said, adding that the show's new showrunner, Sam Catlin, has breathed fresh life into the project. Unlike the first season, which Farrell described as “building a plane mid-flight,” Season 2 came together more smoothly. Catlin “explored new avenues,” making the collaboration a joy for the star and executive producer.
In Sugar Season 2, the charming investigator John Sugar (Farrell) continues his search for his missing sister while taking on a new case: finding the older brother of an up-and-coming boxer. As the investigation expands into a city-wide conspiracy, Sugar must decide what he's truly willing to do for what's right. Farrell promises fans will see more of the show's mythology unfold.
One key element Farrell is passionate about is keeping production in Los Angeles. “It’s important to shoot here,” he said, emphasizing the city's role in the show's identity. The series, which blends noir detective work with sci-fi twists, has already been praised for its unique tone. For a deeper dive into the first season, check out our Sugar Season 1 recap.
Farrell also touched on his upcoming return to Gotham City for Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II. “They start in a week,” he revealed, adding that the script is “extraordinary.” Farrell will fly to London for a few weeks of filming, though he admitted he doesn't have a huge role. “I’m so excited to see it as a fan,” he said. In a playful segment, Farrell weighed in on how John Sugar would react to modern trends. The character, an alien obsessed with human culture, would “hate, hate, hate” AI-generated movie trailers and driverless robo-taxis. “He loves human beings,” Farrell explained. “He loves the tactility of human beings. He loves how flawed we are.” Pickleball, however, got a thumbs-up—though Sugar would find it bizarre.
Farrell also shared his favorite Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan films. For Spielberg, he cited Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., calling them part of a trilogy about “what is out there.” For Nolan, he praised Oppenheimer as “perfect” and named The Prestige as his go-to rewatch.
Sugar Season 2 premieres June 19 on Apple TV+. With Farrell's enthusiasm and a solid creative team, the series could indeed run for several more seasons—if the audience sticks around.
