San Diego Comic-Con 2026 brought a surprise for Big Bang Theory fans: the cast and creators of the new HBO Max spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, took the stage to celebrate the show's debut. But according to the actors, the announcement of the series was almost as shocking as the show's plot twists.
Kevin Sussman, who reprises his role as the lovable comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom, revealed that when creator Chuck Lorre first called with the news, the cast thought they were being pranked. "We thought we were being Punk'd," Sussman joked during the panel, which was moderated by Collider's Steven Weintraub. The sentiment was echoed by his co-stars Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert), and John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke), who all admitted they couldn't believe the spin-off was actually happening.
The 10-episode series picks up with Stuart accidentally breaking Sheldon and Leonard's dimension-traveling device, forcing him to team up with Denise, Bert, and the ever-annoying Barry Kripke to save the multiverse. The show has been praised for giving life to some of The Big Bang Theory's most underappreciated characters, and the cast and creators are clearly excited about the bold direction.
During the panel, the creative team—Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady—discussed the ambitious scope of the series. They explained that they built the season organically, letting each episode naturally lead to the next rather than mapping everything out in advance. This approach allowed for surprising twists and turns, including a Season 1 finale that the cast predicts will leave viewers "staggering" and "befuddled."
One of the biggest challenges, according to the cast, was the elaborate wirework and stunts required for the sci-fi action sequences. "There were moments where we thought, 'How are we going to pull this off?'" Posehn admitted. Sussman added that he constantly challenged the show's quantum physics, prompting the writers to create a timeline flowchart just to keep track of the alternate universes.
The cast also teased some of the strangest things they had to do for their episodes, from wearing ridiculous costumes to performing physically demanding stunts. "I never thought I'd be doing wirework as a geologist," Posehn joked. The creators, meanwhile, discussed how they decided which alternate universes and storylines to explore, aiming to keep the show fresh and unpredictable.
As for a potential Season 2, Lorre teased that there are plenty of ideas in the pipeline. "We've only scratched the surface," he said. The cast echoed his enthusiasm, with Lapkus hinting that the cliffhanger finale sets up even wilder adventures. "Viewers are going to be shocked and immediately want more," she said.
