For fans of The Rookie who are counting down the days until its next season, the BBC has a worthy substitute that's about to hit U.S. shores. Blue Lights, the gritty Belfast-set police drama, has just dropped its Season 4 trailer ahead of its American debut on BritBox this November.
The series follows three probationary officers—Grace, Tommy, and Annie—as they navigate the high-pressure world of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Much like the beloved ABC show, these rookies are paired with seasoned mentors who guide them through the complexities of the job. But Blue Lights carves its own identity with a raw, unflinching look at the challenges of policing in a city still healing from decades of conflict.
A New Season, Higher Stakes
Three years into their roles as response officers, our trio is pushed to their breaking point. Season 4 finds them confronting a new threat on the streets—one that the police are struggling to contain. The drug trade in Northern Ireland has become a hydra, and every attempt to cut off one head seems to spawn two more.
Adding to the tension is the murder trial of Gerry Cliff, which threatens to unearth a secret that's been buried for years. As the truth begins to surface, it sends shockwaves through both the police force and the criminal underworld, forcing Grace, Tommy, and Annie to question everything they thought they knew.
The trailer teases a season of moral ambiguity and personal reckoning. The former rookies are no longer wide-eyed newcomers; they're battle-hardened officers who must decide if they have the courage to face the greatest threat of all: the truth.
Cast and Crew
Returning to lead the charge are Siân Brooke (known for Sherlock), Nathan Braniff, and Katherine Devlin (from The Day of the Jackal), who reprise their roles as Grace, Tommy, and Annie. They're joined by a stellar supporting cast including Martin McCann (Hostage), Joanne Crawford (Outlander: Blood of My Blood), Andi Osho (The Sandman), Frank Blake (Normal People), and Andrea Irvine (Call the Midwife).
Behind the scenes, the series is created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, who also serve as writers and executive producers. Stephen Wright of Two Cities Television and Louise Gallagher of Gallagher Films are co-creators and co-producers, with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Brendan Mullin produces Season 4, with Angela Griffin directing the first three episodes and Sam O'Mahoney taking the helm for the final three. Nick Lambon is the BBC executive producer.
When and Where to Watch
Blue Lights Season 4 premieres on BritBox on November 12, with new episodes rolling out weekly until the finale on December 17. The show has already aired in the U.K., where it has been praised for its compelling storytelling and strong performances.
If you're looking for a new police drama to fill the void left by The Rookie's hiatus, Blue Lights is a must-watch. It's a show that doesn't shy away from the moral complexities of law enforcement, and Season 4 promises to be its most intense yet.
