Fans of the Reagan family have been holding out hope for a Tom Selleck comeback in the Blue Bloods universe, and now Donnie Wahlberg is shedding light on what it would take. The actor, who stars as Danny Reagan in the spinoff Boston Blue, recently opened up about the possibility of his TV dad returning—and it turns out there's a very specific condition attached.
Selleck portrayed NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan for all 14 seasons of the original series, which wrapped in December 2024. Since then, he's stayed away from the franchise, even as Boston Blue continues the Reagan saga with Danny at the helm. But Wahlberg, who also executive produces the spinoff, hasn't given up on a reunion.
Speaking to People while promoting the current season, Wahlberg expressed his deep admiration for Selleck and revealed what it would take to get him back in uniform. "I love him and respect him so much. I know what it will require," he said. "It's going to require the most thoughtful, elegant episode that the Brandons [co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis] and I can pull together. And he will do it, but it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously. And he takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously."
That legacy is something Wahlberg clearly cherishes. The two actors shared the screen for over a decade, and their on-screen father-son dynamic was a cornerstone of Blue Bloods. Now, with Boston Blue firmly established, the door remains open for Selleck to step back into the role—if the story is worthy.
Meanwhile, Boston Blue Season 2 is already delivering its own Reagan family moments. Just last week, CBS confirmed that Will Estes will reprise his role as Jamie Reagan in an upcoming episode titled "Blood Diamonds," airing November 6, 2026. The episode will see Danny and Jamie team up in Boston, getting caught in a diamond heist that ties into a violent family feud. The synopsis also teases personal confrontations between the brothers, adding emotional weight to the action.
The episode, directed by Monica Raymund, will also feature subplots involving Mae, Lena, and Sarah and Seth, ensuring a full slate of drama. New episodes of Boston Blue air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and stream the next day on Paramount+.
For fans who can't get enough of the Reagan universe, this season is shaping up to be a nostalgic ride. And while Selleck's return remains uncertain, Wahlberg's comments suggest it's not out of the question. As he put it, the right script could bring Frank Reagan back to the small screen.
In the meantime, viewers can enjoy the current season and the upcoming Jamie-Danny reunion. And who knows? If the Brandons and Wahlberg craft something truly special, we might just see the family patriarch one more time.
