Apple TV+ has just given fans of its breakout horror comedy Widows Bay something to celebrate: the series has been officially renewed for a second season. The announcement came via a clever video that shows Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) handing a note to town employee Dale (Jeff Hiller), canceling the town's fireworks display—a scene from episode 5. But when the camera zooms in on the note, it reveals the show's return.

The renewal is hardly a shock given the show's stellar reception. Widows Bay currently holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its blend of chills and laughs. Collider's Emily Bernard called it "the most daring, weirdest show on Apple TV," a high bar considering the platform also houses hits like Silo, Severance, and Pluribus. The series has even sparked renewed interest in Rhys' earlier work, particularly the Cold War spy thriller The Americans.

Paul Wesley Teases Kirk and Spock Spin-Off: 'We'd Love to Do It'
Paul Wesley says he and Ethan Peck are eager for a Kirk and Spock spin-off, but Paramount hasn't called yet. Season 4 of 'Strange New Worlds' premieres July 23.

What Is 'Widows Bay' About?

Set on the fictional New England island town of the same name, Widows Bay follows Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) as he tries to boost tourism and transform the isolated hamlet into "the next Martha's Vineyard." But his efforts keep awakening a sinister curse that unleashes all sorts of supernatural horrors—from sea hags and masked slashers to the town's own undead founder. Helping him (or sometimes hindering him) are his intrepid assistant Patricia (Kate O'Flynn), Sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll), grumpy town employee Rosemary (Dale Dickey), local eccentric Wyck Crawford (Stephen Root), and Loftis' moody son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick).

The series is created and executive-produced by Katie Dippold (The Heat), who has since signed a new overall deal with Apple. Hiro Murai (Atlanta) also executive-produces and directed five of the ten episodes, including the premiere and finale.

With its first season finale just around the corner, fans can now look forward to more supernatural shenanigans in season 2. For those who haven't caught up, Widows Bay is a must-watch for anyone who loves horror with a side of humor—and a healthy dose of New England quirkiness. Stay tuned for more updates on the show's return.
