In the Apple TV+ series Widow's Bay, a quaint New England island town is plagued by a sea hag, a Boogeyman, and a centuries-old curse. The unlikely trio of Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), town drunk Wyck (Stephen Root), and invisible woman Patricia (Kate O'Flynn) must band together to save the town. But as the Season 1 finale reveals, the truth is far more sinister than anyone imagined.

The finale's shocking twist involves the elderly Ruth (K Callan), who must be sacrificed to end the curse. Tom is tasked with the deed, but he soon discovers that killing Ruth won't stop the malevolence. The real horror lies in the town's dark history and the descendants of its founders.

Widow's Bay Showrunner Katie Dippold on Finale Twist and Season 2 Plans
Widow's Bay showrunner Katie Dippold discusses the season finale's game-changing reveal, how it shapes Season 2, and the show's journey from a Parks and Rec spec script to a hit horror-comedy.

In an interview with Collider, Rhys, Root, and O'Flynn discussed the finale's reveals, their characters' arcs, and what Season 2 might hold.

Matthew Rhys on the Sea Hag: 'It Was Creepy'

Rhys described working with the sea hag, who appears in various forms throughout the season. 'There were two sea hags: a stunt hag and a sea hag,' he said. 'The car-driving scene on that road was genuinely scary. The headlights created this sinister atmosphere. But then there were moments when she was being thrown that you'd laugh out loud when you weren't supposed to. That's beautifully Widow's Bay.'

He appreciated having a real actor to react to, rather than CGI. 'It's nice to react to a real human instead of someone shouting, “The dinosaur is running towards you!”'

Kate O'Flynn on Patricia's Journey: From Invisible to Empowered

O'Flynn's character Patricia starts as an introvert who feels invisible, but Episode 4 reveals her backstory and her desire for community. 'Initially, you think, “What's her deal?” She leaves every conversation mortally wounded,' O'Flynn said. 'But in Episode 4, you see the pain she's been through and the ecstasy of her best night ever. It fills in all the different colors of Patricia.'

Patricia wants to be seen as helpful, but underneath, she craves friendship and a sense of belonging. 'She gets past how she's seen and finds her tribe,' O'Flynn added.

Stephen Root on Wyck: The Frustrated Protector

Root's character Wyck is often dismissed as the town drunk, but he's actually the most informed about the curse. 'He's trying to protect the town, and he feels like he has the chutzpah to do it while Tom does not,' Root explained. 'He's researched this for years and is frustrated that no one listens. Eventually, they find a way to work together to combat the island itself, which is an entity.'

Root noted that all three characters are searching for universal things: love, forgiveness, and connection.

The Unifying Moment in Episode 7

The trio shares a pivotal moment in Episode 7 that cements their alliance. 'I thought it was a really seminal moment for the three of them,' Rhys said. The scene brings together their disparate personalities and sets the stage for the finale's chaos.

As for Season 2, the finale's cliffhanger leaves Tom, Wyck, and Patricia facing an even greater threat. With the curse's true nature revealed, the town's fate hangs in the balance. Fans are already speculating about what's next, especially after the show's recent success at the TCA nominations.
