As the Yellowstone universe continues to expand, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Dutton saga. With Marshals returning for a second season this October, star Luke Grimes has finally addressed the possibility of a long-rumored crossover with fellow spinoff Dutton Ranch—and his answer is sure to excite the franchise's devoted fanbase.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in Marshals, confirmed that while Season 2 will not feature a crossover with Dutton Ranch, he and his on-screen sister Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) have been actively discussing the idea. "It's not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point," Grimes said. "Beth's basically Kayce's only living family member other than Tate. It would make sense that down the line we'd at least talk."
The actor went on to reveal that he and Reilly have been texting about the potential reunion, agreeing that it's "necessary" for their character arcs. "[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot," Grimes added. "Talked about how it'd be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they're going to end."
This isn't the first time the cast has hinted at a crossover. Reilly and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) have also expressed interest in seeing their characters interact with the Marshals storyline. However, until now, Grimes had remained tight-lipped about the possibility.
Marshals picks up after the events of Yellowstone, with Kayce and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) trying to build a new life at East Camp, the remnants of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The first season ended with a cliffhanger when wealthy rancher Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) kidnapped Tate, setting the stage for a high-stakes rescue mission in Season 2.
Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip as they relocate to Texas to start fresh, but their new beginning is complicated by the abduction of their adopted son Carter (Finn Little) in the Season 1 finale. The series, which boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has been renewed for a second season, with Benjamin Cavell taking over as showrunner.
While the two shows share the same universe, they have distinct tones. Marshals leans into law enforcement and the gritty realities of the American West, while Dutton Ranch focuses on the emotional toll of protecting a family legacy. A crossover would bridge these worlds, offering fans a chance to see the Dutton siblings reunite after years of separation.
For now, fans will have to wait. Marshals Season 2 premieres on October 4, and while a crossover isn't on the immediate horizon, the door is clearly open. As Grimes put it, "It's not out of the question."
