It's not every day a TV show gets a second chance, let alone a third, but Dexter has defied the odds time and again. The original series, starring Michael C. Hall as the vigilante serial killer, ended with a notoriously unsatisfying finale. Eight years later, Dexter: New Blood tried to make amends but stumbled again. Just when it seemed Dexter Morgan's story was over, Dexter: Resurrection arrived last year and breathed new life into the franchise. Now, as Season 2 prepares to hit Paramount+, here's everything you need to remember from the explosive first season.
Dexter Survives and Reunites with Harrison
Season 1 kicks off with a jaw-dropping revelation: Dexter survived being shot by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), at the end of New Blood. Believing his father dead, Harrison flees to New York City, where he works as a concierge at a swanky hotel and harbors feelings for a single mother named Elsa (Emilia Suárez). But Harrison can't escape his nature. When he witnesses a sexual assault, he snaps and kills the attacker, then dismembers the body and dumps it in the river—just like dear old dad taught him.
When Dexter wakes from his coma and hears about the remains found with his signature M.O., he immediately knows Harrison is responsible. Guided by the ghost of his father, Harry (James Remar), Dexter heads to New York to find his son and help him. After watching from the shadows, Dexter steps in just as Harrison is about to confess to detectives Claudette Wallace (Kadia Saraf) and Melvin Oliva (Dominic Fumusa). The reunion is tense, but as they reconnect, Dexter realizes he can save Harrison from the same dark path he's walked.
A New Villain: Peter Dinklage's Leon Prater
In a city of millions, Dexter finds plenty of new targets. His first kill is serial killer Red Schmidt (Marc Menchaca), but after the deed, he discovers Red was invited to a mysterious dinner. Posing as Red, Dexter infiltrates the mansion of billionaire philanthropist Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), who turns out to be a collector of serial killers. Prater has gathered several murderers under his roof, and Dexter can't let them live. He systematically eliminates them, though Eric Stonestreet's Rapunzel Killer manages to escape.
As Dexter takes bigger risks, his former Miami colleague Angel Batista (David Zayas) pieces together that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Batista's relentless pursuit leads to a tragic climax: Prater captures Batista and forces Dexter to choose between killing his old friend or refusing. Dexter refuses, and Prater murders Batista himself—before Dexter unleashes his full fury on the collector.
What's Next for Dexter and the Gang
With Prater dead and Batista gone, Dexter: Resurrection could have ended, but Season 2 is already set up. Harrison, determined to honor his family's legacy, plans to pursue a career in law enforcement, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and aunt. Meanwhile, Prater's assistant Charley (Uma Thurman) finally has a chance to escape the bloodshed—but with Thurman confirmed for Season 2, it seems she's not out of the woods yet.
Dexter himself has undergone a profound transformation. After a lifetime of faking emotions, his love for Harrison has made him genuinely care about others. He's even made a real friend in Blessing Kamara (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine). But that doesn't mean he's hanging up his knives. If anything, his mission to rid the world of predators is stronger than ever.
Season 1 ends with Dexter in possession of Prater's files on serial killers, including the Rapunzel Killer, who's still at large. He also discovers the identity of the retired New York Ripper—played by Brian Cox—and leaves the file for Detective Wallace, who's obsessed with the case. Meanwhile, Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), another former Miami colleague, knows about Batista's investigation. With Harrington returning for Season 2, it's only a matter of time before Quinn tracks Dexter down, setting the stage for a tense new chapter where anyone in Dexter's life could be in danger.
