Before Harry Potter ever stepped foot in Hogwarts, before dragon riders and chosen ones became fantasy staples, there was Earthsea. Ursula K. Le Guin's groundbreaking series, which helped shape the modern fantasy landscape, is getting a monumental new release this fall.
Library of America will publish The Complete Earthsea on October 13, 2026, as a two-volume hardcover box set spanning 1,344 pages. Edited by Brian Attebery, this definitive collection gathers all six novels—A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea, and The Other Wind—along with additional stories from Le Guin's richly imagined world.
Volume One contains the earlier novels and stories, while Volume Two presents the later books and further Earthsea material. The series follows Ged, a poor smith's son who discovers a magical talent and is sent to a wizard school. During a duel with a fellow student, he summons a terrifying shadow creature that haunts him long after his training ends. His journey to confront that darkness—learning that fears and shadows must be faced, and that darkness is as much a part of us as the light—remains one of fantasy's most profound coming-of-age arcs.
Earthsea is widely credited with popularizing the "wizard goes to school" trope that later became central to Harry Potter and countless other series. But Le Guin's world is stranger and more thoughtful than many of the stories it inspired. Magic here is powerful but dangerous, and the series explores themes of balance, identity, and responsibility with a philosophical depth that sets it apart.
