Bit Bot Media, known for its eclectic mix of original comics, Blu-ray releases, and video games, is teaming up with acclaimed comic artist Tyler Kirkham to bring his Image Comics series Final Boss to life as a video game. The project, now available to wishlist on Steam, promises a genre-bending experience that pays homage to arcade classics while delivering a fresh, modern twist.
Kirkham, a fan-favorite artist who has worked on major titles for Marvel and DC, wrote and illustrated the Final Boss comic. The story follows Tommy Brazen, a former street brawler who discovers his past is tied to a larger, darker conflict. The game adaptation will mirror this narrative arc, starting as a side-scrolling pixel-art beat-'em-up reminiscent of Double Dragon or Streets of Rage, designed for up to four-player couch co-op. As players progress, the action escalates into a climactic one-on-one 3D fighting game boss battle, blending two classic genres into one cohesive experience.
Bit Bot co-owner Joshua Viola will lead the creative process alongside industry veteran Frank O'Connor, former Franchise Creative Director for Halo and Perfect Dark. O'Connor emphasized that the adaptation strikes a balance between genre-bending gameplay and staying true to the source material. The game will also feature animated comic panels to introduce each boss, directly connecting to the comic's visual style.
Musician Celldweller, whose work includes scores for Dead Rising 2 and the 2013 Killer Instinct reboot, will compose the game's soundtrack. Bit Bot's in-house studio, Mecanimal, will handle development, with Kirkham serving as a key collaborator throughout the process.
“One of the things that immediately excited us about Final Boss is that the comic already feels like a video game,” Viola said. “Tyler created a world that celebrates arcade brawlers, fighting games, comics, and action cinema. Rather than simply adapting those ideas, we're building a game around them.”
Bit Bot has a strong track record in game development, with 14 released titles and five more in the works, including the ambitious sci-fi action experience Unioverse. The company also publishes original comics like the meta-horror series True Believers and releases Blu-rays for cult favorites such as PG: Psycho Goreman and Shin Ultraman.
For fans of retro beat-'em-ups and modern fighting games, Final Boss looks set to deliver a unique blend of old-school charm and contemporary design. As the gaming world eagerly awaits more details, this adaptation proves that sometimes the best video games are born from comics that already feel like they belong on the screen.
