Will Forte isn't ready to hang up MacGruber's mullet just yet. The comedian, known for his iconic SNL character, has made it clear that he's still eager to dive back into the world of the bumbling special agent. At the premiere of his latest film, Coyote vs. Acme, Forte opened up about his enduring love for the role and the possibility of more adventures.
MacGruber first exploded onto the scene as a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch in 2007, parodying the resourceful TV hero MacGyver. The character's popularity led to a 2010 feature film and a 2021 Peacock miniseries, but Forte's appetite for the character remains unsatiated. For him, the magic lies not just in the character itself, but in the people he gets to work with.
"MacGruber is the character I most want to do at every point of my life," Forte shared. "It's just non-stop fun for me. The group that I get to do it with... John, Jorma, Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Brandon Trost... It's just a wonderful group of people that I love being with, so it's fun to do, and as I get older all I want to do is do stuff with people I like, and have fun, and there's nothing more fun than doing that. Just big, stupid fun."
That sentiment echoes the camaraderie that has defined the MacGruber franchise from its inception. Writers John Solomon and Jorma Taccone, along with co-star Kristen Wiig, have been with Forte since the SNL days, and their chemistry is a big part of why fans keep clamoring for more. The 2021 miniseries, which also starred Ryan Phillippe, was a hit with audiences and critics alike, proving that there's still a hunger for the character's unique brand of chaos.
When asked about a potential crossover between MacGruber and the world of Coyote vs. Acme, Forte couldn't resist imagining the possibilities. "It would be very one-sided, for one, because Wile doesn't talk, and MacGruber talks too much. And I feel like it would end in MacGruber somehow getting Wile exploded, and Wile suing MacGruber. I feel like that's how it would end. Maybe that's, you know, Coyote vs. MacGruber is the sequel?"
While that crossover might be a pipe dream, Forte's enthusiasm for the character is undeniable. Fans of the franchise have been hoping for a second season of the Peacock series or another film, and Forte's comments suggest that he's more than willing to make that happen if the opportunity arises. The actor's busy schedule, which includes voice work and other film projects, might be the only obstacle.
In Coyote vs. Acme, Forte plays Kevin Avery, a lawyer who takes on the case of Wile E. Coyote in his lawsuit against the Acme Corporation. The film, which also stars Lana Condor, Tone Bell, Martha Kelly, and John Cena, is a live-action/animation hybrid that has been generating buzz since its announcement. Forte's role is a departure from his usual comedic antics, but he brings the same energy and charm that have made him a fan favorite.
As for MacGruber's future, Forte remains hopeful. "I would love to do more," he said. "It's just a matter of finding the right story and getting everyone together. But I'm always ready to put the mullet back on."
For now, fans can catch Forte in Coyote vs. Acme, which is in theaters now. And with his continued passion for MacGruber, it seems only a matter of time before we see the character return in some form. Stay tuned for updates on any potential MacGruber news and more from the world of entertainment.
