Eight years after it first hit theaters, Tom Hardy's Venom has found a new home on Paramount+, and it's quickly becoming a streaming sensation. The 2018 Marvel antihero film, which kicked off Sony's Spider-Man adjacent universe, is now available for subscribers to enjoy—and it's proving that its weird, chaotic energy still resonates with audiences.
What makes Venom stand out from the typical superhero fare is its willingness to be a little messy. Tom Hardy's performance as Eddie Brock is a masterclass in offbeat choices, turning what could have been a straightforward origin story into something delightfully strange. The film's heart lies in the bizarre relationship between Brock and the alien symbiote, a dynamic that gives the movie a comic pulse you don't often see in polished franchise blockbusters. It may not be elegant, but it's undeniably fun.
Now that it's streaming on Paramount+, Venom is reaching a new wave of viewers who might have missed it the first time around. Whether you're revisiting or discovering it for the first time, the film's oddball charm holds up. Alongside Hardy, the cast includes Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot, Scott Haze as Roland Treece, Reid Scott as Dr. Dan Lewis, and Jenny Slate as Dr. Dora Skirth.
The Spider-Man Crossover That Never Was
Fans have long wondered if Hardy's Venom would ever share the screen with Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Back in 2019, director Ruben Fleischer told Fandom that the original plan was always to collide the two franchises. "That's where it's all going to lead," Fleischer said. "We changed the origin of Venom [for the first movie]. In the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man, but because of the Marvel-Sony thing, we weren't able to do that."
Despite the tease, the Venom trilogy never delivered that showdown. But Hardy has no regrets. "We were given a set of boundaries, and we were just really privileged to be able to play with a much-beloved IP like Venom in a way that we were allowed to play," he said. "The enjoyment of the work outweighed the limits of our possibilities with him because we just focused on what we were allowed to do. And we loved doing it."
For fans still hoping for a crossover, there's always the possibility that Sony and Marvel could revisit the idea. In the meantime, Venom remains a standout in the superhero genre, proving that a little weirdness goes a long way. If you're in the mood for a blockbuster with bite, it's streaming now on Paramount+.
