Before the final season of The Boys premieres, fans can dive deeper into the supe-filled universe with a new virtual reality experience. The Boys: Trigger Warning, a VR game developed by ARVORE Immersive, launches on March 26 and puts players directly into the chaos. Stepping into the boots of a new character named Lucas, players will team up with Billy Butcher and Mother's Milk, powered by Temp V on a personal revenge mission.
While the game features appearances from key figures like Kimiko, Ashley, and Homelander, developers recently revealed several notable absences. In an exclusive presentation, the team confirmed that fan-favorite Frenchie was originally planned for a significant role but ultimately cut. "There was a plan for him to cook Temp V for the player," the developers explained, "but we couldn't make it work in a way that served the story."
Another major character sitting this one out is Hughie Campbell. The developers clarified that Hughie's absence is by design, as the player essentially takes on his narrative role. "The player serves as Hughie in this story," they noted, adding that this approach "fits very much into The Boys canon." This creative decision allows players to feel like they're the new recruit in Butcher's crew.
In a reveal that will intrigue fans, the developers also teased a "twisted version of Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy" that was conceptualized but didn't make the final game. While details on this alternate take remain scarce, it hints at the creative avenues explored during development. The game will, however, feature an entire mission centered around the terrifying Homelander, though both he and Butcher are voiced by sound-alike actors, not the original stars.
What Powers Await in Trigger Warning?
Players can expect a substantial experience, with gameplay lasting between 8 to 12 hours depending on exploration. The core ability is telekinesis, letting users hurl objects, hover, and lunge at enemies. Scattered throughout the world are vials of Temp V that grant temporary, 15-second boosts with one of three powers: Laser Eyes, Blade Hands, or Active Camouflage. Use them strategically, as they are limited resources.
The development process involved testing over 30 different superpowers, including a shrinking ability similar to Gen V's Little Cricket. They ultimately distilled it down to the core four that best served the gameplay. To ensure the game feels authentically part of the universe, writers from the TV series, including creator Eric Kripke, collaborated with the ARVORE team. This partnership is why players will face a new faction called the Armstrong family, rather than directly taking on members of The Seven.
This kind of behind-the-scenes insight into creative cuts isn't unique to the world of The Boys. Just as Steven Knight revealed a scrapped Tom Hardy cameo for a Peaky Blinders project, seeing which ideas don't make the final product is always fascinating for fans.
With the highly anticipated final season of The Boys landing on Prime Video on April 8, Trigger Warning serves as a perfect, immersive appetizer. It allows players to live out the violent, satirical fantasy of being a supe—at least for a few hours—before the main series returns to wrap up its story.
