Since Tim Burton's 1989 Batman brought the Dark Knight to a new generation, fans have come to expect a fresh take on the Caped Crusader every few years. But after Matt Reeves' gritty 2022 reboot The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, the Bat-signal has been dark for far too long. Now, with new casting announcements and a confirmed release date, the sequel is finally taking shape—but patience will be key.
Slated for an October 1, 2027 release, The Batman Part II is one of Warner Bros.' most anticipated titles. The studio's 2027 slate also includes James Gunn's Man of Tomorrow, but Reeves' film exists in its own separate universe—a point Gunn has publicly supported. This standalone world, which also includes the HBO Max series The Penguin, allows Reeves to craft his vision without the constraints of a shared canon.
Reeves recently shared the first images from the sequel, captioned with "#SnowTires." The moody camera tests show the Batmobile navigating snowy terrain, hinting at a wintery Gotham that retains the gritty realism of the original. Returning cast members include Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb/The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Barry Keoghan as the Joker.
New additions are generating major buzz. Sebastian Stan will play Harvey Dent, the Gotham City district attorney who transforms into the villain Two-Face. Scarlett Johansson joins as Gilda Dent, Harvey's wife, and Charles Dance portrays Harvey's father. Stan told Deadline the film is "ambitious" and will "blow people away." Johansson's casting was teased by Reeves on X with a rearview mirror gif captioned "Next exit, Gotham... Welcome."
One major question remains: will Paul Dano return as the Riddler? The character was last seen imprisoned at Arkham Asylum alongside the Joker. In a recent interview with Collider, Dano claimed ignorance about his involvement, saying, "Matt is so caring and obsessive... I hope maybe I’ll get to dance again." His uncertainty leaves the door open—or closed—for the iconic villain.
Originally slated for October 2025, The Batman Part II has been delayed twice—first to 2026, then to 2027. While some worry about a pattern of DC delays (remember The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom?), Reeves' deliberate pace suggests he's crafting something special. Pattinson confirmed filming will begin soon during his press tour for The Drama.
