For years, Outlander has been the crown jewel of Starz—a perfect blend of epic romance, fantasy, and historical drama that kept viewers hooked. But as that saga winds down (even with the spin-off Blood of My Blood still in play), the network is hungry for its next obsession. Enter The Wolf King, a steamy new fantasy drama that could fill those very big shoes.
Based on Lauren Palphreyman's bestselling romantic fantasy trilogy, The Wolf King is officially in development at Starz. The project has Tanya Saracho—the creator behind Starz's acclaimed series Vida—attached as showrunner and executive producer. Palphreyman will also serve as an executive producer, ensuring the adaptation stays true to her wildly popular books.
What Is 'The Wolf King' About?
This is a full-blown romantasy story, complete with princesses, werewolves, supernatural forces, and—yes—a love triangle. The official synopsis sets the stage:
"When a princess is kidnapped by an alpha, war rages between the humans and the wolves. But soon, forbidden attraction starts to grow. Princess Aurora longs to escape the castle and the marriage that has been arranged for her. But on the night before her wedding, at a dog fight where captured werewolves are made to fight for sport, she spares the life of a young wolf. It puts her on the radar of the powerful alpha who was going to kill him. And it changes everything."
It's a classic enemies-to-lovers setup with a dark, dangerous twist—exactly the kind of high-stakes romance that made Outlander a phenomenon.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time for 'The Wolf King'
Fantasy is having a moment. The Game of Thrones universe continues to thrive with House of the Dragon and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, while Netflix's The Witcher is gearing up for its final season. Prime Video's Wheel of Time is also making a major multimedia comeback. Into this landscape, The Wolf King arrives with a built-in fanbase and a fresh take on werewolf lore.

What to Expect from the Adaptation
Palphreyman first self-published The Wolf King in 2023, followed by The Night Prince in 2025. The trilogy will conclude with The Wolf Queen, due in November. Saracho shared her excitement in a statement:
"Coming back home to Starz with The Wolf King is a full-circle moment for me. This book has been my obsession since I first found it as an indie release over a year ago, and I've been lovingly championing it ever since. While Lauren Palphreyman's beautiful book series is an exciting departure from the genre I'm typically known for, getting to adapt it for the network that housed Vida for three seasons just feels destined to be. I couldn't be more ecstatic to finally share my love for this story with the world!"
Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for Starz, added: "With the rich world Lauren Palphreyman has created in 'The Wolf King' and our longstanding relationship with Tanya—whose instinct for sexy, nuanced storytelling is unmatched—we're excited to bring this saga to screen with all the heat and heart it deserves."
The project is still in early development, so no casting or release date has been announced yet. But with Saracho's track record and the source material's passionate fanbase, The Wolf King is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fantasy series in development.
