With the second and final season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on the horizon, fans are getting one last chance to spend time with the cadets before they return to the screen. IDW Publishing is collecting the five-issue miniseries Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact into a complete trade paperback, set to arrive in stores on January 27, 2027.
Set in the 32nd century, nearly a thousand years after most other Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy follows a new generation of cadets as they navigate the challenges of training to be explorers in a galaxy still recovering from the devastating event known as The Burn. That catastrophe killed billions and made space travel incredibly dangerous. Now, as the Federation rebuilds, the Academy has reopened its doors, and these young recruits are dealing with first loves, first losses, and a deadly reactionary movement threatening to tear the galaxy apart.
The Lost Contact comic series, written by Layne Morgan (Legacies) with art by newcomer Corali Espuna, follows cadets Caleb, Genesis, Jay-Den, Kyle, and Tarima on what seems like a routine mission to an uninhabited planet. But when a disaster cuts them off from their instructors, they come face-to-face with strange new life forms. The trade paperback collects all five issues, offering a perfect primer for the show's final season.
This isn't the only Star Trek comic news from IDW. The publisher is also releasing the ongoing series Star Trek, which follows Seven of Nine and the Enterprise-G as they explore uncharted space. Coming up is Star Trek: Crusher, a five-issue miniseries that delves into Dr. Beverly Crusher's adventures between The Next Generation and Picard, written with input from Gates McFadden, who played Crusher for years. Additionally, acclaimed Star Wars novelist Timothy Zahn is teaming with artist Ángel Hernández for Star Trek: Roc's Egg, a graphic novel centered on a mystery aboard Deep Space Nine.
For those eager to catch up on the show, Georgia Tennant's return to the Doctor Who universe might not be directly related, but it's a reminder of how interconnected sci-fi fandoms are. Meanwhile, if you're looking for other streaming options, Brendan Fraser's The Mummy is back on Netflix ahead of its sequel.
The Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact trade paperback will be available on January 27, 2027. Stay tuned for more updates as the final season approaches.
