Star Trek is marking its 60th anniversary with a bold new crossover that brings the final frontier to the trading card game realm. Wizards of the Coast's upcoming Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set is set to launch on November 13, and it's not just about the captains. The game's designers have dug deep into the franchise's rich lore, pulling in everything from starship tech to the unsung heroes who keep the fleet running.
Previous previews have already given fans a glimpse of iconic figures like Kirk, Picard, and Sisko, but the latest reveal shines a spotlight on a character who's been a cornerstone of Vulcan diplomacy for decades. Collider has exclusively obtained eight new cards from the set, headlined by two stunning art treatments for Sarek, Federation Ambassador. Spock's father gets his due alongside a diverse lineup that includes Astute Terraformer, Boarding Action, Fugitive Listener, Oberth-Class Starship, Pattern Buffer Preservation, Photosynthetic Physician, and Tal Shiar Analyst.
Sarek's Card Rewards a Diverse Crew
The Sarek card is a fascinating addition to the game, designed to encourage players to build a varied team. As a green, white, and blue legendary creature, Sarek draws a card at the beginning of combat for every five creature types among your non-Borg creatures. If you manage to draw at least three cards this way, he grants two +1/+1 counters to every creature you control. It's a subtle but powerful ability that mirrors the ambassador's diplomatic finesse—he doesn't need to fight to make an impact.
The standard artwork by Darren Tan captures Sarek extending his hand in a gesture of greeting, while Oliver Barrett's alternate version offers a striking portrait framed by gold and a cosmic backdrop. Both versions share the same abilities, with the standard card also featuring the succinct flavor text: "Threats are illogical."
The supporting cards are equally inventive in translating Trek concepts into game mechanics. Boarding Action creates a Klingon Warrior token with haste, while Pattern Buffer Preservation lets you choose one of the top two cards of your library to keep, sending the other to the graveyard. Both cards feature the Beam me up ability, allowing you to cast them from the graveyard by paying the listed cost and returning a creature you control to your hand before exiling the spell.
Other cards add strategic depth: Fugitive Listener forces each opponent to discard a card when it enters the battlefield, and Tal Shiar Analyst deals damage to every opponent with its tap ability, untapping whenever you cast a noncreature spell. Astute Terraformer benefits from having differently named lands, while Photosynthetic Physician can be exiled from the graveyard to create an Officer token. Finally, Oberth-Class Starship helps you find a basic Plains and can become a flying creature once you've staffed it sufficiently through its Station ability.
This crossover is part of a broader trend of reimagining iconic sci-fi elements in new formats, and it's sure to appeal to both Trek devotees and MTG collectors. The set will be available in stores starting November 13, with pre-release events kicking off on November 6 and a digital release on MTG Arena arriving November 10.
