After seven years of pushing boundaries and sparking conversations, Sam Levinson is officially closing the chapter on his time at HBO. The Euphoria creator, along with his wife and producing partner Ashley Levinson, has signed a new deal with Amazon MGM Studios to develop and produce television projects for the streaming giant.
Levinson's Tiny Goat Productions banner will now call Amazon MGM home, a move that signals a major shift in the television landscape. The news comes on the heels of a turbulent third season of Euphoria, which, despite its controversies, remained a ratings powerhouse.
A New Chapter for a Controversial Creator
Since its 2019 debut, Euphoria has been both a critical darling and a lightning rod for debate. The series earned 32 Primetime Emmy nominations and nine wins across its first two seasons, cementing its place as one of the most talked-about shows of its era. However, the long-awaited third season, which premiered earlier this year, drew significant backlash from fans who felt the narrative choices had lost their edge.
Despite the criticism, the show's popularity was undeniable. The Season 3 premiere pulled in 8.5 million viewers within three days—a 44% jump from the Season 2 premiere—and the season averaged 25 million views per episode, a 17% increase over its predecessor.
What This Means for Levinson's Future
In a statement, Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, praised Levinson as "one of the most daring and original voices in television today" and expressed excitement about giving him "creative freedom and a global platform." Levinson echoed that enthusiasm, saying he and Ashley are "grateful for their trust" and can't wait to get to work.
This move also comes as Euphoria prepares for a physical release. A special Blu-ray and DVD collection featuring all three seasons, including bonus episodes like "Trouble Don't Last Always" and "F*** Anyone Who's Not a Sea Blob," is set to drop on December 15.
Levinson's departure from HBO marks the end of an era, but his new partnership with Amazon MGM could open doors to even more ambitious projects. Fans of his bold storytelling will be watching closely to see what he cooks up next.
