Roland Emmerich, the master of big-budget disaster flicks, has seen better days. Once a box office titan with hits like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, his recent theatrical releases have struggled to find an audience. His latest, the sci-fi epic Moonfall, is a prime example—and now it's streaming on Prime Video as of July 2026.
With a reported budget of $150 million, Moonfall is one of the most expensive independently produced films ever made. Only Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and the 2009 reboot Terminator Salvation cost more, both around $200 million. But unlike those films, Moonfall managed to gross less than half its budget, pulling in just $70 million worldwide. Ouch.
The film stars Patrick Wilson and Halle Berry as a ragtag team of astronauts and conspiracy theorists who discover that the moon is actually a massive, artificially constructed structure—a premise that takes the conspiracy theories from Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and dials them up to 11. Critics were not kind: Moonfall holds a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus calling it a B-movie cheese fest that's pure Emmerich through and through.
Emmerich's dry spell stretches back to 2009, when 2012 was his last genuine hit. Since then, he's directed the conspiracy drama Anonymous, the action-comedy White House Down, the queer drama Stonewall, the sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, and the World War II movie Midway. None of them set the box office on fire.
For fans of big, dumb, fun disaster movies, Moonfall might be worth a watch—especially if you're already subscribed to Prime Video. It joins a growing library of July 2026 streaming titles, including Russell Crowe's Oscar-winning 'Gladiator' and Matt Damon's 'The Martian'. If you're in the mood for something more dramatic, check out Prime Video's 'It's Not Like That', which has quietly become 2026's most surprising drama.
Whether you're a fan of Emmerich's over-the-top style or just curious about one of the biggest box office bombs in recent memory, Moonfall is now available to stream. Stay tuned to ShowtimeSpot for more updates on what's coming to Prime Video and beyond.
