Half a century after the Italian Stallion first stepped into the ring, Rocky is gearing up for a monumental comeback. The 1976 classic, which captured the hearts of audiences worldwide and went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, is set to return to the big screen in stunning 4K for its 50th anniversary. But that's not all—fans will also get an exclusive sneak peek at the highly anticipated Sylvester Stallone biopic, I Play Rocky.
Amazon MGM Studios has pulled out all the stops for this milestone celebration. From November 7–11, Rocky will be screened in more than 3,000 theaters across the country, thanks to a partnership with Fathom Entertainment. The theatrical rerelease will include a special first-look scene from I Play Rocky, giving audiences a taste of the film that chronicles Stallone's relentless fight to bring his underdog story to life.
A Night of Music and Memories
The festivities kick off with a one-of-a-kind Rocky in Concert event at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre on November 5. Sylvester Stallone will join Oscar-winning composer Bill Conti for an intimate conversation about the original film, alongside I Play Rocky director Peter Farrelly and star Anthony Ippolito. Following the discussion, a live orchestra will perform Conti's legendary score while the film plays on the big screen—a truly immersive experience for die-hard fans.
Philadelphia Takes Center Stage
As expected, Philadelphia—the city that Rocky called home—will be at the heart of the anniversary celebrations. On November 13, fans will gather at the iconic Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Rocky Balboa. Participants are encouraged to don the character's signature grey sweats, black knit hat, and Converse-style sneakers to join in the fun.
The same day will also mark the permanent installation of the Rocky statue at the top of the museum steps, complete with a rededication ceremony. Additional events include a Philadelphia 76ers tribute on November 2, the Rocky Run on November 14, and a free anniversary screening at Los Angeles' historic Saban Theatre on November 16.
Beyond the Big Screen
For those who can't make it to the theaters, Amazon MGM Studios has launched a digital exhibition through Prime Video, featuring behind-the-scenes footage, cast retrospectives, and a timeline of the franchise's history. Fans can explore the exhibit at the official Rocky 50 website, where they'll also find limited-edition merchandise and newly recorded orchestral versions of Conti's iconic music.
The anniversary celebrations coincide with the release of I Play Rocky, which tells the true story of how Stallone fought to bring his original screenplay to the screen while insisting on playing the lead role himself. Anthony Ippolito stars as the young Stallone, alongside a talented cast including AnnaSophia Robb, Stephan James, Kiki Seto, P.J. Byrne, Jay Duplass, Matt Dillon, and Tracy Letts.
With the 50th anniversary of Rocky, fans old and new have the chance to experience the film that defined an era and inspired generations. Whether you're revisiting the classic or discovering it for the first time, this celebration promises to be a knockout.
