College comedies are a dime a dozen, but every so often one comes along that truly captures the awkward, messy, and hilarious reality of young adulthood. Prime Video's Overcompensating is that rare gem. Created by and starring Benito Skinner (aka Benny Drama), the series dropped its first season on May 15, 2025, and quickly earned a stellar 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, with Season 2 already in post-production, there's no better time to catch up on this must-watch comedy.
The show follows Benny, a closeted gay college freshman who goes to extreme lengths to hide his true identity, adopting straight stereotypes and losing himself in the process. Along the way, he forms an unbreakable bond with Carmen (Wally Baram), an outcast in her own right, rekindles a competitive dynamic with his sister Grace (Mary Beth Barone), who harbors her own secrets, and develops a major crush on the charming Miles (Rish Shah). Across eight episodes, viewers are treated to a whirlwind of cringey, shocking, and laugh-out-loud moments set against the backdrop of Yates College.
Why 'Overcompensating' Stands Out
While the Rotten Tomatoes score alone is impressive, Overcompensating offers more than just laughs. In a review for Collider, Emma Kiely praised the show's ability to balance humor with genuine character depth. "Even though the script is so sharp and full of belly-laugh-inducing one-liners, what really sells the heart and humor of the show is the cast," she wrote. Skinner, she noted, brings a mix of confusion, joy, anxiety, self-hatred, and warmth to his role, while Baram's Carmen avoids the typical tropes often assigned to female characters in similar shows.
The supporting cast is equally memorable. Hailee (Holmes), Carmen's ditzy and unfiltered roommate, provides some of the series' wildest moments, but Holmes ensures she remains endearing. Meanwhile, Adam DiMarco's frat boy Peter initially seems like the ultimate playboy, but the show slowly reveals his insecurities and doubts. These multidimensional characters make Overcompensating a cut above typical college comedies.
What to Expect from Season 2
Season 2 was greenlit almost immediately after the first season's success, and filming began in April 2025. While a release date hasn't been announced, creator Benito Skinner has teased what's in store. In an interview with People, he said the new season "feels more queer" because his character Benny is less in the closet. "We didn't make a whole new show, but we did elevate it in a lot of ways," Skinner explained. "I think there's a maturity to it. I'm really excited — and it's nasty."
Returning cast members include Skinner, Baram, Holmes, Barone, DiMarco, and Shah. New faces joining the ensemble are Tom Francis as Declan Bishop, Aisha Dee as Naomi, and AnnaSophia Robb as Chels. Recurring roles from Season 1, including Connie Britton and Kyle MacLachlan as Benny and Grace's parents, and Lukas Gage as Benny's high school crush, will also return.
If you haven't yet dived into Overcompensating, now is the perfect time. The first season is a binge-worthy blend of humor and heart that will leave you quoting lines long after the credits roll. And with Season 2 likely just a few months away, you won't have to wait long for more of Benny's chaotic journey.
