For three decades, Pikachu has been the face of the Pokémon franchise, appearing in games, anime, and countless collaborations. But now, the iconic Electric-type has achieved something truly out of this world: a trip to the International Space Station (ISS).

The European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed that a special Astronaut Pikachu plush accompanied ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot on a mission from April 11 to June 17. During those 67 days, Pikachu circled the Earth approximately 1,040 times, floating about 250 miles above the planet's surface. A newly released image shows the plush inside the Cupola, a European-built observation module offering stunning views of Earth below.

This cosmic adventure is part of a broader collaboration between ESA and The Pokémon Company International, timed to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary and World Space Week (October 4-10). The partnership aims to inspire fans to learn about space exploration while enjoying their favorite Pokémon.

Bringing Space Science to Pokémon Fans

For those of us stuck on Earth, there are plenty of ways to join the fun. A traveling exhibition will visit ESA facilities and major museums across Europe until April 2027. The family-friendly experience uses Pokémon-themed displays to explain how Europe launches missions, supports astronauts on the ISS, studies the Sun, and explores the universe.

Additionally, participating science and space museums will host an exclusive Pokémon GO event from October 4, 2026, through April 30, 2027. Visitors can encounter Astronaut Pikachu in One-Star Raids, complete Timed Research, find specially selected Pokémon, and even catch creatures with Location Backgrounds unique to each venue.
