After nearly 16 years of surviving the zombie apocalypse, Norman Reedus has finally said goodbye to Daryl Dixon. The actor, who became a household name playing the crossbow-wielding survivor on AMC's The Walking Dead, has wrapped filming on the fourth and final season of his spin-off, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. It's the end of an era for one of TV's most beloved characters.

Reedus took to Instagram this week to share behind-the-scenes photos from the final episode, showing champagne bottles popping, hugs with co-star Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier), and heartfelt moments with the cast and crew. In a touching caption, he wrote: "Finally going through these photos to check off from the last episode now that I'm back from Mongolia, it was really hard to kill any of them. I didn't post any of those here, but I can't wait for people to see this show the crew best I've ever worked with the feeling of accomplishment when it was over was just amazing. Such hard work and so much heart put into this I think you're gonna feel it. It was a special season. I can't wait for you to see it. It hits just way different this time."

Before building his TV empire, Taylor Sheridan guest-starred on 'Veronica Mars' as a bumbling criminal. Here's how that role paved the way for 'Yellowstone.'

A Journey from Georgia to Spain

Daryl Dixon first appeared in The Walking Dead's first season back in 2010, searching for his brother Merle in the Georgia wilderness. He quickly became a fan favorite, surviving all 11 seasons of the original series and later starring in video games and his own spin-off. The spin-off, which premiered in 2023, took Daryl to France and later Spain, where he's been trying to find his way home alongside Carol. Season 4 will pick up after the dramatic events of Season 3, where their best hope of returning to America literally went up in flames.

Reedus has often spoken about how much the character has evolved over the years. In an interview with Collider, he said: "It's a real opportunity to be able to play a character that long and watch him grow and have the world watch him grow. As long as he just keeps growing, it's good. Daryl is completely different from how he first started on the show, in every single way." He added that he didn't expect to still enjoy playing Daryl so much, especially as the world of television and cinema has changed around him.

What's Next for Daryl and Carol?

Not much is known about the plot of Season 4, but it will likely focus on Daryl and Carol's journey in Spain after their escape from Solaz del Mar. Reedus has hinted that this final season will feel "totally different" from what fans have seen before, with a more character-centric approach that explores why Daryl is always running. The emotional weight of saying goodbye to a character who has been growing for over a decade and a half will undoubtedly be felt by fans.

The spin-off itself has changed significantly since it began, starting in Paris under creator David Zabel with a completely new cast. Now, as it heads into its final chapter, Reedus is grateful for the ride. "I love going back to it," he said. "The different ways that he evolves and matures in this world around him coincides with me, as an actor, playing him. It's pretty wild."

A Legacy Beyond The Walking Dead

While Daryl Dixon has been Reedus's most recognizable role, his career includes standout performances in The Boondock Saints, The Bikeriders, and Hideo Kojima's video game Death Stranding. But for fans of the zombie genre, Daryl will always be the ultimate survivor. As the final season approaches, viewers can expect an ending that honors the character's long journey.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon returns on AMC later this year, though an exact release date hasn't been announced.
