The Duffer Brothers may have officially moved on from Netflix, but their legacy of genre-bending thrills continues with The Boroughs, a new sci-fi mystery thriller that trades Hawkins, Indiana for a retirement community in the New Mexico desert. The latest trailer, set to David Bowie's "Golden Years," offers a chilling glimpse at what happens when golden years turn into a nightmare.
Created and showrun by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), The Boroughs is executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, who have described it as sharing DNA with Stranger Things and Ron Howard's Cocoon. The series follows Alfred Molina's Sam Cooper, a reluctant newcomer to the idyllic Boroughs retirement community. While other residents seem to have found paradise, Sam sees it as a gilded cage—and soon discovers it's something far more sinister.
The new trailer ramps up the terror, showing spindly hands, inhuman clicks, and other "impossible things" lurking in the shadows. Sam teams up with a band of fellow misfits—played by a powerhouse ensemble including Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, and Jena Malone—to uncover the community's dark secrets. The cast also features Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg, Ed Begley Jr., Dee Wallace, Eric Edelstein, Rafael Casal, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Beth Bailey, Karan Soni, and Jane Kaczmarek.
For Molina, this marks his first leading live-action TV role since Prime Video's Three Pines, and a reunion with Netflix after voicing Cronus in Blood of Zeus. The series promises a blend of sci-fi horror and mystery that should appeal to fans of Stranger Things and anyone who loves a good thriller. The Boroughs is one of the last series from their original Netflix pact, and it's shaping up to be a must-watch for genre fans.
